How fast does discount phone service start working?

How soon after I sign up and put minutes on a inmates phone through the InmateAid discount phone service, how soon will they be able to use the phone, and how does it actually work? Thank you!

The service starts working very quickly, usually within about an hour after you sign up.

Here is how it works step by step:

1. You sign up and complete payment
Once your order is processed, a new local phone number is created for you that matches the area of the facility.

2. You receive your new number
This is typically sent to you by email within about an hour. At that point, the number is active and ready to use.

3. You must give the number to the inmate
This is the most important step. The inmate will not know about the number unless you send it to them. You can:

  • Write it in a letter
  • Tell them during a call if you already have contact

They will need to add this number to their approved call list if required by the facility.

4. How the calls work

  • The inmate dials the local number you were given
  • The prison phone company treats it as a local call, which is cheaper
  • The call is forwarded to your actual phone

From your end, nothing changes. Your phone rings like normal.

Important things to understand:

  • You still need an account with the prison’s phone provider
  • The service reduces the cost of calls, it does not eliminate them
  • The inmate must have funds or calling ability to place calls

Timing in reality:

  • The number works within about an hour
  • The delay depends on how fast you get the number to the inmate and get it approved

Once they have the number and it is approved, they can start calling right away.
