The length of time an inmate spends in the Special Housing Unit, commonly called the hole or the SHU, depends almost entirely on what was found and how serious the facility considers the infraction.

At the minor end of the spectrum a small infraction might result in a week or two in the SHU followed by the loss of certain privileges like visitation, phone access, or commissary for a set period. These situations are unpleasant but manageable and the inmate typically returns to general population relatively quickly.

At the more serious end the consequences escalate significantly based on what was found.

A contraband cellphone is one of the most serious infractions in any correctional facility. An inmate caught with an illegal smartphone can expect to spend months in the SHU, not days or weeks. Beyond the SHU stay a phone violation almost always triggers a redesignation to a higher security facility. The inmate who was comfortable in a low or medium security environment can find themselves transferred to a significantly harsher situation because of one device.

Drugs found in a cell carry severe consequences that vary by the type and quantity involved. A small personal use amount is treated differently than an amount that suggests distribution. Either way the SHU stay will be substantial and additional criminal charges are possible depending on the jurisdiction and the substance involved.

Weapons or items construed as weapons are treated with maximum seriousness. The SHU stay can be extended, and the likelihood of redesignation to a higher-security facility increases considerably.

When multiple items are found, the infractions are typically addressed together in a disciplinary hearing rather than stacked as separate penalties. However, the severity of the most serious item found tends to drive the overall consequence.

The honest reality is that anything found in a cell that should not be there carries real consequences that extend well beyond the SHU stay itself. Lost privileges, transfers, and damaged records affect everything from program eligibility to release date calculations.
