How long SHU time for fighting in federal prison

What is the average "hole" time given to (federal) inmates for fighting? My fiance was not involved but caught on camera in the vicinity of a fight. Has been in the hole for 9 days as of today and has received no word as to length of stay. Thank you. I am so glad i found this site! I have never dealt with the prison system and am pretty much lost.

In the federal system, “the hole” is called the Special Housing Unit (SHU), and the amount of time an inmate spends there after a fight can vary quite a bit.

There is no true “average,” but here is a realistic range:

  • Investigation phase:
It is common for inmates to be placed in SHU for a week or two while staff review what happened. Your fiancé being there for 9 days so far fits within that normal window.
  • After the hearing (if charged):
If the Disciplinary Hearing Officer (DHO) determines involvement, sanctions can range from:
    • Time served (released shortly after the hearing)
    • A few weeks to a few months in SHU
    • In more serious cases, longer terms

Since he was not directly involved but present, that can matter. The outcome will depend on:

  • What the video shows
  • Statements from other inmates
  • His own explanation
  • His prior disciplinary record

What to expect next:

  • He should receive notice of a disciplinary hearing
  • He can present his side and may have a staff member speak on his behalf
  • The DHO makes the final decision

Possible additional penalties:

  • Loss of phone, commissary, or visitation for a period
  • Loss of good time (in more serious findings)
  • Possible transfer or custody level change

Right now, it is very possible he is still in administrative detention pending review, not yet serving a formal SHU sentence. That is why he has not been told a length yet.

If he truly was not involved, there is a reasonable chance this could end with minimal or time-served consequences, but it depends on how the investigation comes out.
