The most reliable way to get your phone number to an inmate is by mail.

Most jails do not allow staff to pass along personal messages like phone numbers over the phone. If you call, it really depends on who answers. Some staff may help, but most will follow policy and refuse to relay any message.

Your best options are:

  • Send a letter with your phone number clearly written
  • Use a service like InmateAid to send a letter quickly and make sure it is formatted correctly for the facility
  • Have a mutual contact who is already in touch with the inmate pass along your number

Once the inmate has your number, they will need to:

  • Add it to their approved call list
  • Wait for it to be approved if the facility requires it
  • Call you through the jail’s phone provider

Keep in mind that inmates cannot receive incoming calls, so you cannot call them directly. All calls must be initiated by the inmate.

Mail is the most dependable method, even if it takes a few days, because it ensures your number actually reaches them without relying on staff discretion.
