How to notify inmate of a death in the family
My husband has been in jail off and on for 6 mo now. There is no money for the phones but I need to tell my husband there has been a death in the family. How do I do that?
In a situation like this, the fastest and most effective way is to contact the facility directly and ask to speak with the chaplain or a counselor.
Most jails and prisons have a process for urgent or sensitive messages like a death in the family. The chaplain or designated staff member can:
- Verify the information if needed
- Deliver the message to your husband in person
- Offer him support at the same time
If you call the main number, explain clearly that it is a family emergency and ask to be connected to the chaplain’s office or inmate services.
If you cannot reach the chaplain right away, you can also:
- Ask to speak with a counselor or case manager
- Request that staff pass along an urgent message
As a backup, you should still send a letter through InmateAid so he has the details in writing, but for something this important, calling the facility is the best first step.
This is one of the few situations where facilities will usually step in to help communicate quickly.
