How much money do inmates really need monthly

So my husband is in Madison work camp I have been sending $100 a month and packs every quarter it never seems like it's enough he says $100 a month is nothing. How much money is really needed for hygiene and snacks?

At places like Madison Work Center, there is no single “right” amount to send. What inmates spend varies a lot based on habits, appetite, and what they are used to having.

Here is a realistic breakdown:

Basic needs (covered by the facility):

  • Toiletries like soap and toothpaste (basic versions)
  • Meals (standard portions)
  • Clothing and essentials

Commissary extras:
This is where your money goes:

  • Better hygiene items (name-brand, more comfortable)
  • Snacks and drinks
  • Writing supplies
  • Occasional clothing or shoes

Typical spending ranges:

  • $50–$100/month: basic comfort, careful spending
  • $100–$200/month: more snacks and better products
  • $200–$300+/month: frequent snacks, extras, and convenience items

So when he says $100 is “nothing,” that usually reflects wanting more comfort, not actual need.

Important perspective:

  • The prison provides enough to get by
  • What you send is to improve quality of life, not survival
  • It is easy for inmates to get used to more and ask for more

Best advice:
Send what you can comfortably afford, not what you feel pressured to send. Consistency matters more than amount. If $100/month is within your means, that is already a solid level of support.
