This is a serious charge, and the fact that bond was denied is a strong sign the court sees it as high risk.

Strangulation in a domestic situation is treated very seriously in most states. In many places it is charged as a felony because it can easily lead to death, even if that was not the stated intent. Prosecutors and judges tend to take a hard line on these cases.

A few factors working against your son:

  • Allegation of strangulation, which is considered a high level of violence
  • Prior arrests, especially multiple ones, which suggest a pattern
  • Bond denied, meaning the judge believes he may be a danger or a flight risk

Because of this, yes, prison time is a real possibility if he is convicted.

That said, the outcome is not decided yet. It will depend on:

  • The exact charges filed
  • The evidence in the case
  • Whether there are injuries or medical reports
  • His legal representation
  • Any plea negotiations

The mental health issue matters
If he truly has an undiagnosed mental health condition, that needs to be brought up immediately by his attorney. Courts can order:

  • Mental health evaluations
  • Treatment programs
  • Consideration of competency

This does not excuse the charge, but it can affect how the case is handled and possibly the outcome.

What you can do now:

  • Make sure he has a competent defense attorney
  • Push for a mental health evaluation as early as possible
  • Stay involved in understanding his case through the court or his lawyer

This is a difficult situation. The system is going to focus first on the seriousness of the alleged offense and the safety of others. The mental health side needs to be addressed alongside that as early as possible.
