Subject: Release questions

There is no time frame if there is no bail. They can place a "material witness hold" that requires very low standards of proof to hold a witness they say might leave the jurisdiction; flight risk - and it carries has no bail. They are not charging them with a crime, they are claiming that this person has vital information and their testimony is crucial to another case altogether.

Call the facility directly and ask to speak with his case manager. Explain that you know he was injured and placed in segregation and that you have not heard from him. Case managers are the primary point of contact for inmate welfare inquiries and can at least confirm his current status, even if they cannot share detailed medical information. You probably already know the answer. The mail room did not do this. Incoming and outgoing mail at correctional facilities is handled by corrections staff, and while mistakes happen occasionally, deliberately switching the contents of two outgoing envelopes is not something that occurs on their end. This was his doing. The more important question is what it tells you. A man corresponding romantically with another woman from inside is making a deliberate choice. Inmates get a good time credit when they begin their sentence. In almost all cases, this is 15%, meaning the offender will do 85% of their time (less halfway house which could be 1 month to 9 months). The RRM address that the BOP posts is not where he will live. We have a directory online that has ALL of the facilities. There is no email service for the RRM as far as we know. They have Corrlinks in the prisons now but it is not functioning in the halfway house.
