The commissary is one of the most important parts of daily life inside a correctional facility. It is where inmates purchase food to supplement institutional meals, personal care items, stationery, postage, and in many facilities access to phone credits and entertainment. For families on the outside understanding how commissary works, how to put money on an account, and what items are available can make a meaningful difference in their loved one's daily comfort and wellbeing. This section covers how commissary accounts work across federal and state facilities, how much money can be deposited and how often, what items are typically available, how commissary functions as informal currency inside facilities, and how to send money efficiently using approved services. The practical knowledge here comes from people who lived inside and know firsthand what a well-funded commissary account means to someone doing time. The facilities provide shoes although they are of a minimalist nature. Most offer a choice of upgrades through the commissary. The choices include various work boots to several sneaker brands. One other way inmates get shoes is that there are always the industrious inmates who have contacts in the system where they resell shoes left over from inmates who have been released. The prices for the used goods are paid for with items from the commissary (usually not exceeding $5-10). It...

Depending on where your inmate is incarcerated, they will have a weekly or monthly spending limit. Most county jails have a $50-75 per week limit. Federal has a $340 per month spending limit. There are also the cost of the phone calls to be considered. You should budget according to your own needs first and then the inmate's. Some people on the outside worry about their inmate so much on the inside that they send them more money than they...

Not all county jails offer people the ability to send in commissary packages. There are five or six companies that provide the service but they have to hav ea preset arrangement with the institution to do so. Our advise is to call the jail itself and ask a staff membe because they are not listing anything on their website - 972-204-7001

We are not certain. Most county jails do NOT have a program where you send in care packages - although some do. You might have to put some money on their books for them to shop at the commissary themselves. To be certain, you might try calling the facility (325-365-2110) and ask to speak with the case manager, counselor or unit team secretary to get more information.

Commissary shopping days are different in every institution. Most are set days based upon their housing unit, inmate ID number or first initial of their last name. The cost of sneakers ranges from $50 - $100 depending on the brand and style. Usually there are 3-5 options to choose from.

Yes, Luzerne County Correctional does have an indigent inmate program. It is not a full commissary allowance, but it covers the basics for inmates who have had a zero balance in their account for three consecutive months. Once that threshold is met, the facility provides some essential personal hygiene items along with postage stamps and writing materials so the inmate can send letters. The three-month zero-balance requirement is the key detail here. An inmate does not automatically qualify just because they...

Commissary pricing for basic clothing items like socks, boxers, and t-shirts is generally comparable to what you would pay at a store like Walmart or Target. The markup is not dramatic and the commissary is not designed to be a profit center the way a retail store is. It is meant to provide inmates access to necessities at reasonable prices. That said, pricing varies by facility and by the vendor contracted to run the commissary operation. A pair of socks at...

Inmates do NOT have access to the Internet. There are no computers to the outside world. There are however some email programs in various places like federal prison where the inmate can pay-per-minute to send and read emails. It is on about a 2-hour delay and is very expensive but it does work well. Inmates are strictly prohibited from the use of a cellphone. Cellphones are considered dangerous contraband and carry a punishment of up to an extra five years in...
