A furlough is a temporary authorized release from a correctional facility that allows an inmate to leave for a specific purpose and return by a designated time. Furloughs are granted for a range of reasons including medical treatment, family emergencies, job interviews, and in some cases, educational or rehabilitative activities. This section covers what furloughs are available in federal and state systems, how to apply for a furlough, what conditions are typically attached, what happens if a furlough is violated, and how furlough eligibility interacts with an inmate's security classification and disciplinary record. Furloughs are not available at every facility or for every inmate and the rules vary significantly by jurisdiction. The practical guidance here helps families understand what is realistically possible and how to support a successful furlough application. Furloughs are only granted to inmates with a perfect record and relatively short time left remaining on their sentence. You can call the facility and ask to speak to your inmate's counselor or case manager to see if he qualifies.

There are several release options being offered to inmates with non-violent offenses. We are hearing that home confinement is the preferred method for these furloughed releases. Just a caution to the loved ones of possible release, they will have serious stipulations on the release and you can help make sure yours sticks to the rules because we are also hearing people violating within hours and then being sent back to the SHU. "Be careful" is all I'm saying.

Absolutely not, there is no way they will be furloughed for that to happen... sorry to be the bearer of that news

If they are granted furloughs where they are incarcerated they might be eligible to enjoy a weekend at home

Not likely, the only time furloughs are considered is when someone is on their "death bed" or for a funeral.

It depends on where, but MOST facilities have completely stopped conjugal visits... bummer :(

You cannot petition for an inmate's furlough, it must be granted from within. Four months is not long enough to be considered for a furlough.

You would have to get permission from the warden to travel too long a distance. It is highly unlikely that they will allow that or furlough to a hotel or temporary residence.

It depends on the "paperwork". There is a wide variance of time. It could be 2 months or 6 months before they actually walk out the door.

Yes, that is the step-down pattern for inmates close to the door. They are given little bits of freedom to slowly rejoin the family unit and successfully get back into society. Your fiance needs to be on top of his game in following directions and being where he is supposed to be at all times. This is not a time to play it fast and loose.
