What is Everglades CI like for inmates and families?

Hello my husband is being transferred to Everglades CI from Madison work camp on a good adjustment transfer to be closer to myself and our children. I have looked up the prison but however I am only seeing very old posts about it. I need some information on this prison this is our first run in with the prison system thank God but I am nervous and want to know as much as possible about it. Is it a rough prison? How are the officers? How is visitation? can you smoke there? do they have any educational training there other then GED? honestly anything would help. Thank you so much!

It is completely normal to feel nervous, especially if this is your first experience with the prison system. The good news is that a transfer closer to home, especially on good adjustment, is a positive sign.

Everglades CI is not considered one of the more dangerous or chaotic facilities. It houses a mix of inmates, but many are closer to release or have demonstrated better behavior. In those environments, most people are focused on doing their time, staying out of trouble, and getting home. That tends to reduce unnecessary conflict.

Day to day environment:
Like any prison, there are rules, structure, and personalities to deal with, but inmates who keep to themselves, avoid drama, and stay focused generally do fine. Since your husband earned a transfer for good adjustment, that works strongly in his favor.

Staff and officers:
Experiences with officers can vary, but most facilities operate professionally. The key for inmates is to follow rules and avoid confrontation. That usually keeps interactions with staff straightforward.

Visitation:
Visitation is allowed, and being closer to you and the kids is one of the biggest benefits of this transfer. You will need to be on his approved visitation list, and visits are typically structured with specific days and times. Once approved, visits become a very important part of staying connected.

Smoking:
Officially, Florida prisons are non smoking facilities. That said, tobacco does circulate inside, but it is not allowed and can lead to disciplinary trouble if caught. It is best for him to avoid it if he wants to stay on track.

Programs and opportunities:
Everglades CI offers a range of programs beyond just GED, which can help him stay busy and improve his situation:

  • Adult education and literacy programs
  • Substance abuse and recovery programs
  • Faith based and chaplaincy services
  • Anger and stress management
  • Reentry and transition programs
  • Work and vocational type opportunities
  • Wellness and self improvement programs

These programs are important because they not only pass time but can also help with early release considerations and personal growth.

What matters most:
The biggest factor in how his experience goes is how he carries himself. Inmates who:

  • Stay respectful
  • Avoid conflicts
  • Keep a routine
  • Stay connected to family

tend to do much better.

The fact that he is being moved closer to you is a very good sign. Your support, visits, letters, and calls will make a huge difference in how he gets through this.

You do not need to worry about it being some out of control environment. It is still prison, but for someone focused on getting home and doing the right things, it is manageable.
