Will You Be Assigned to the Camp or Low Security at Ft. Dix?

I have recently been assigned to Fort Dix for voluntary surrender. My sentence is 30 months for a white collar non violent crime. I understand their is low security and minimum security camp. How do I know which one I will be assigned to?

Fort Dix is one of the largest federal correctional complexes in the country and it operates both a low security facility and a minimum security satellite camp on the same grounds. Understanding how the assignment process works before you arrive takes a lot of the uncertainty out of what is already a stressful experience.

When you surrender, you will be processed through the intake area, which is located in the low security facility. Everyone goes through this initial processing regardless of where they will ultimately be housed. During that period, your paperwork, criminal history, and classification factors get reviewed by staff who make the housing determination.

For a 30-month sentence on a nonviolent white-collar offense with no history of violence, the classification scoring almost certainly points toward the minimum security camp. The Bureau of Prisons uses a point system to determine custody level and factors like sentence length, offense type, criminal history, age, and community ties all feed into that calculation. A short sentence, no violence, no prior record, and a nonviolent offense typically produce a low enough score for camp designation.

The caveat is paperwork. If your presentence report or other documentation is not in order when you arrive the processing can stall and you may spend time in the SHU while things get sorted out. That is not a punishment and it is not permanent but it is unpleasant. Making sure all of your paperwork is complete and accurate before your surrender date eliminates that risk.

One program worth understanding immediately if you have not already is RDAP, the Residential Drug Abuse Program. If you have a documented history of substance abuse and your attorney prepared your presentence report with RDAP eligibility in mind, completing the program can reduce your 30 month sentence by up to 12 months. If your attorney did not address this ask about it before your surrender date because the window to prepare that documentation closes quickly once you are inside.
