Possession of any weapon inside a correctional facility is a serious violation regardless of whether it was used to harm anyone. Intent and circumstances matter less than the fact of possession, and the consequences come from multiple directions at once. On the institutional side, an inmate found with a knife or any improvised weapon faces immediate placement in disciplinary segregation, loss of good time credits, and a formal incident report that becomes part of their permanent record. A weapon possession charge...

The general rule is a hug and a kiss when you arrive and leave and "no contact" during the visit. The guards pretty much determine how liberal the contact might be (i.e. hand holding ok, "touching" not usually). You just have to be VERY careful and aware during the visit as the guards have the final say. They can end the visit or even suspend future visits. The guards want to be respected, too.

Yes, a denied visitation application can be disputed, and there is a clear path to doing that. The first step is finding out exactly why the application was denied. Facilities are not always forthcoming with this information automatically, but you are entitled to ask. Call the facility and ask to speak with a supervisor, typically the captain or the visitation supervisor, and ask specifically what the reason for the denial was and what information in your application triggered it. Common reasons for...

Visitation approval timelines vary depending on a few key factors, but six weeks is generally enough time for most applications to be processed under normal circumstances. The fastest approvals tend to be immediate family members with clean records applying to visit at facilities that run routine background checks. Those can come through in as little as one to two weeks. Applications take longer when the visitor is not a relative, since non-family visitors often undergo more detailed background screening. Any criminal history...

Can Inmates in the Hole Still Send and Receive Mail?
Yes.…

Yes. Being placed in the SHU, also known as segregation or the hole, does not cut off mail. Inmates in disciplinary or administrative segregation can still send and receive letters. Mail is one of the few things that continues uninterrupted regardless of disciplinary status at most facilities. Phone access is more restricted. Inmates in the SHU are typically limited to one call per week in most facilities, compared to the broader access available in general population. Some facilities allow slightly more,...

According to the facility's published information, visiting hours at Philadelphia House of Correction run Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Visitors must sign in by 3:30 PM to be processed for a visit that day. Arriving after the sign-in cutoff means you will not get in regardless of how early the listed hours end. Before making the trip, call the facility directly at 215-685-8215 to confirm the current schedule and verify any specific requirements for your husband's housing...

Will a Foreign Traffic Warrant Stop Me From Visiting a Jail?
A traffic warrant from a foreign country is a very different situation than a warrant from another county or state within the United States.…

A traffic warrant from a foreign country is a very different situation than a warrant from another county or state within the United States. Here is the distinction that matters. US county jails run background checks on visitors through domestic law enforcement databases. A warrant issued by a foreign government's traffic authority is generally not going to appear in those systems and would not typically trigger a detainer or result in you being held when you arrive for a visit. In...

Attending a court hearing where your friend is present is not the same as visiting them, and the distinction matters significantly. Members of the public can generally attend court proceedings as observers since most hearings are open to the public. You can sit in the gallery and be present in the courtroom. However, that is where it ends. Making eye contact, waving, mouthing words, passing notes, or any form of acknowledged communication with the inmate during a court proceeding can create...

There is no public-facing system that broadcasts lockdown status at federal facilities in real time. Getting that information requires going directly to the people inside the institution who may or may not be willing to share it. Your best chance is to call USP Beaumont and ask specifically to speak with the Unit Team Secretary, a counselor, or a case manager. These are the staff members most likely to give you a useful answer. Regular correctional officers on the floor will...

If you arrive at a facility and your family member has already used their maximum visitation allowance for the week, you will most likely be turned away without a visit. Facilities track visitation credits and enforce the limits strictly in most cases. Getting a message to an inmate through staff is possible but not reliable. Guards and correctional officers are generally not in the business of passing along informal messages from visitors who were not able to get in. Some facilities...

When a visitation request gets denied, the reason given is not always the real reason, and it is worth digging deeper before accepting the outcome. Age similarity to another approved visitor is not a standard basis for denying a visitation request. That explanation does not appear in any typical visitation policy and should raise questions. There may be something else going on that has not been communicated directly, whether that is a restriction on the inmate's end, a concern about the...

Video visitation availability depends entirely on the facility. Not every jail or prison offers webcam visits, and those that do use different platforms and have different procedures for setting them up. The first step is confirming whether your family member's facility offers video visitation at all. Call the facility directly and ask whether they have a video visitation program and which platform they use. Common providers include JPay, Securus, GTL, and Telmate, each of which has its own app or website...

When someone is taken into custody after a court hearing, there is typically a brief intake and orientation period before visitation is permitted. The exact timeline varies by facility, but most jails require new inmates to complete some form of intake processing before their visiting list is established and approved. At Harford County Detention Center, the process works like this: your fiancee will submit a list of approved visitors, and the facility will process those requests before any visits can take...

Inmates receive three meals a day across all facility types, but the quality and variety vary considerably depending on where someone is incarcerated. Federal facilities generally have the best food in the system. Meals are planned by nutrition professionals and meet minimum caloric, protein, and carbohydrate standards established by the Bureau of Prisons. The food is institutional but consistent, and the nutritional baseline is maintained more reliably than in other systems. State prisons fall somewhere in the middle. Quality varies significantly from...
