INTRO
Arkansas runs a centralized, appointment-based visitation system at its state prison units - one of the more structured approaches in the Southern region. Every visit must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance through the ADC's online appointment system. No walk-up visits. The inmate must have you on their approved visitor list before you can schedule. And the dress code has a prohibition that catches more Arkansas families than any other rule: no white clothing.
The Arkansas Division of Correction's visitation policy page (doc.arkansas.gov/correction/visitation-updates/) is one of the most completely published state visitation pages in this directory - last updated February 25, 2026 - and is worth reading in full. This page pulls the specifics families need before they make the drive.
APPROVED VISITOR LIST - HOW IT WORKS
The inmate is responsible for providing you with the visitation application. Once you receive it, complete it and return it to the address listed on the form, to the attention of the Visitation Clerk. The screening process takes at least 7 days - and can take longer. A criminal history check is conducted on all prospective visitors.
The inmate will be notified of approval or denial. The inmate is responsible for informing you of your visitation status. Do not travel to the facility until the inmate confirms you are approved.
Criminal history: Arkansas does not apply an automatic blanket prohibition on visitors with criminal records the way Alabama does. Applications are reviewed by the Warden. The nature of the criminal history, its recency, and the visitor's relationship to the inmate are all considered. Apply and disclose everything accurately - falsification of any information on the visitor application is grounds for permanent denial.
Additional restrictions that automatically disqualify visitors:
- Active protection from abuse (PFA) order involving the inmate
- Previously suspended or revoked visitation privileges
- Being the victim of the inmate
- Being currently on probation or parole (see supervised release section below)
SCHEDULING - 48 HOURS REQUIRED
Arkansas is one of the strictest scheduling states in the directory. All visits must be scheduled at least 48 hours before the start time - no exceptions, no walk-ups.
How to schedule: Online at telegov.egov.com/docrequest from a mobile device or computer. Appointment requests are pending review and approval by ADC. You must be on the inmate's approved visitor list before scheduling.
Frequency: Visits are typically conducted twice a month per inmate, for two hours each. Individual unit schedules vary - contact the specific facility for their visiting days and hours. Regular visits are generally on weekends at most units.
Special visits for distant families: If you are an approved visitor who lives more than 300 miles from the unit, you may request a special visit on any two weekdays during regular visiting hours. The visitor must request the visit at least 24 hours in advance during regular business hours, with warden or center supervisor approval. This is one of the more family-friendly provisions in the directory - out-of-state family members who cannot travel on weekends have a documented pathway.
Attorneys and spiritual advisors: Legal counsel and spiritual advisors may visit at any time consistent with security requirements. Attorneys may not use the ADC video visitation system - attorney visits must be in person.
DRESS CODE - THE WHITE CLOTHING PROHIBITION
Arkansas publishes its dress code directly on the ADC visitation page and it is specific. The rule that catches the most families at the gate:
No white clothing. White is prohibited entirely at Arkansas state prisons. This is the same situation as Alabama - inmate uniforms are white, and wearing white as a visitor creates a security identification problem. Do not wear white shirts, white pants, white shoes, or any white clothing item. Change into something else before you arrive.
Full list from the official ADC dress code (as published on doc.arkansas.gov):
What you cannot wear:
- White clothing of any kind
- Camouflage in any pattern or color
- Halter tops, tank tops, or any sleeveless top - shoulders must be covered at all times
- Shorts (except children age 10 and under, who may wear shorts of appropriate length)
- Mini-skirts or mini-dresses
- Skirts or dresses with slits above the knee
- See-through or sheer clothing
- Leggings or jeggings
- Hats of any kind
- Brief cut or otherwise provocative clothing
What the dress code requires:
- Undergarments must be worn
- Clothing appropriate for the age and occasion
- Covered shoulders - no sleeveless tops of any kind
- No metal on clothing items where possible - metal on clothing delays security clearance and may require additional search procedures including removal of items
Practical tip: Avoid metal on clothing entirely. Belt buckles, rivets, decorative clasps, and metal buttons all trigger the metal detector and slow down the entry process. Simple clothing with minimal metal is the fastest path through.
Bring a change of clothes and leave them in your car. The dress code is enforced at the gate. If you are turned away for a clothing violation, having an alternate outfit gives you the option to change and try again.
WHAT YOU CAN BRING IN
Arkansas ADC publishes the authorized items list explicitly. You may bring in only the following:
- Clear plastic bag containing a small amount of cash for purchasing refreshments from vending
- Prescription medication in your name and in the original pharmacy container (notify officer upon arrival)
- Government-issued photo ID
- Baby bottles, baby diapers, and diaper wipes (for infants only)
- Car keys
- Jewelry (verify with facility for specific limits)
Nothing else. No cell phones, no wallets, no purses, no food from outside, no gum, no tobacco, no lighters. Leave everything else in your car.
VISITOR LIMITS
Four visitors are allowed during any single visit, including children. However, Arkansas has a family-protective exception: a spouse and all children of the inmate may visit together regardless of how many children there are, but only two approved adult visitors may accompany the children when the total count exceeds four. In practice this means a family with three children and both parents can visit together - the parents count as the two adult visitors, the children are not capped separately.
Visitors are responsible for keeping children under control. Failure to supervise children is grounds for termination of the visit.
PROBATIONERS, PAROLEES, AND SUPERVISED VISITORS
Persons currently under probation, parole, or other community supervision are restricted from visiting. This is consistent with Alabama's approach but applied somewhat more narrowly - it applies to current supervision status, not to persons who have completed their supervision.
If you are currently on probation or parole and want to visit a family member, contact ADC directly. Some facilities may allow visits with specific approval, particularly for immediate family members, but this requires warden-level authorization.
CONDUCT DURING THE VISIT
All visits are monitored. Officers can terminate an active visit at any time. Brief embrace at the beginning and end of the visit is standard at contact-visit facilities. During the visit, do not pass any items to the inmate - anything exchanged is treated as contraband.
Once you exit the visitation area, re-entry is not permitted.
Arkansas does not allow conjugal visits - this is published explicitly in the ADC Family and Friends Guide.
VIDEO VISITATION - COST AND RULES
Arkansas ADC offers video visitation at all units through kiosk systems on-site and remote access. Key details:
- Visitors must be on the inmate's approved phone and visitor list before scheduling a video visit
- All video visits must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance (same 48-hour rule as in-person)
- Video visits are 30 minutes in length and begin promptly at the scheduled time
- Cost: $12.99 per 30-minute session (was $5.00 through 2017; increased January 1, 2018)
- All visitation rules apply during video visits, including the dress code - dress as you would for an in-person visit
- All video visits are monitored
- Recording or photographing a video visit is prohibited
- First violation: minimum 1-year suspension of visitation privileges
- Second violation: permanent loss of visitation privileges
- Attorneys may not use the ADC video visitation system
Scheduling: Online at telegov.egov.com/docrequest - same platform as in-person scheduling.
Residential Center video visitation and Phillips County video visitation have separate processes - see doc.arkansas.gov/correction/visitation-updates/ for details on those programs.
ID REQUIREMENTS
Government-issued photo ID required for every visit. Driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport. The name on your ID must match the approved visitor application exactly. Expired IDs are not accepted.
Receive a visitor badge at entry - it must remain visible at all times and be returned on exit.
MINOR VISITOR RULES
Minor children under age 18 may not visit unless accompanied by an approved adult visitor, or upon proof of emancipation. For children of the inmate: all children may visit with the spouse as described above in the visitor limits section. Visitors are responsible for controlling and supervising children - failure to do so terminates the visit.
