Chemung Co Jail is for County Jail offenders sentenced up to twenty four months.
All prisons and jails have Security or Custody levels depending on the inmate’s classification, sentence, and criminal history. Please review the rules and regulations for County - medium facility.

The Chemung County Jail is a medium-security detention center located at 211 William St Elmira, NY which is operated locally by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Chemung County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Elmira Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Corrections Division of the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the staffing, operation, as well as the safety and security of the Chemung County Correctional Facility. The Correctional Facility has a maximum capacity of 262 inmates. The Correctional Facility is overseen by the Office of the Undersheriff and run on a day to day basis by 1 Captain, 4 Lieutenants, 4 Sergeants and 66 Correction Officers. The Sheriff’s Office also employs 20 part-time Correction Officers, 3 full-time nurses and 1 clerk. The Correctional Facility offers a variety of programs to inmates, such as a GED Program, parenting and religious classes and a law library.
Depositing Money into inmates account/hours and procedure - Money will be accepted and deposited into the inmate’s accounts Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 2:30 PM and Monday and Wednesday between the hours of 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Inmates may also receive money the form of cash, money order or checks approved by the Chief Administrative Officer into their account through the mail.
Packages - Magazines, newspapers, softcover books (non-pornographic) (maximum of three each at a time) are allowed into the Chemung County Jail through the United States Mail, U.P.S., Federal Express, etc.
Commissary Services - The Chemung County Jail provides a commissary program for the convenience of inmates and is available once weekly. Items available are those deemed acceptable for inmate needs and are limited to, selected food and snack items, toiletries, clothing, games, and stationery products.
Education Services - The Chemung County Jail invites all qualified inmates to take part in a General Equivalency Diploma Program along with parenting classes or computer classes, which are under the direction of Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
Inmate Counseling Programs - The Chemung County Jail offers the following inmate counseling programs. Inmates wishing to participate in the programs listed below are required to submit an inmate request form, which is available from your housing unit officer.
Inmate Telephone Usage - Inmates in general population will be allowed the use of the telephones located in the housing areas between 0800 and 2300 hours daily.

As of March 18, 2020, registration and visitation rules have changed to protect inmates at Chemung County Jail and their loved ones during the COVID-19 outbreak. At this time, there are no in-person visits for family and friends due to the COVID-19 situation. Video visitation is available; details can be found below or call 607-737-2934.

Each inmate has two (2) authorized one-hour visits per week.
Each visit will consist of two (2) visitors at a maximum, (all children will be counted as a visitor.)
