The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has a longstanding history of over 130 years, dedicated to serving the citizens of Colorado by upholding public safety. With a workforce of over 6,700 correctional professionals, the department supervises more than 23,000 offenders across secure prisons and community placements.
All sectors of the department adhere to the stringent standards set by the American Correctional Association (ACA), with the Colorado DOC proudly being the 14th state correctional system to achieve ACA's Eagle award. ACA accreditation ensures the implementation of the highest national standards and promotes best correctional practices. Through the accreditation process, the department continually evaluates its operations and policies against these standards, addressing inefficiencies and maintaining the highest quality of correctional programs and services.
The DOC operates 19 secure prison facilities along with the Youthful Offender System (YOS). These facilities are designed to accommodate offenders across five custody levels: minimum, minimum restrictive, medium, close, and administrative segregation. The YOS program, managed separately from the adult prison system by the Division of Adult Parole, Community Corrections, and YOS (APCC), focuses on the rehabilitation and reintegration of youthful offenders.
In addition to prison facilities, the department oversees the safe supervision of offenders in community placements. The APCC division is responsible for managing transitional offenders in community corrections programs and overseeing parolees. Its professionals undergo specific training to ensure public safety while employing evidence-based practices to support offenders as they reintegrate into society.
