If someone you love is locked up in Colorado, getting money into their account covers commissary - food, hygiene, writing supplies, phone time - and keeps the connection going. Two things are worth knowing upfront about Colorado state prisons: phone calls are free for people incarcerated in CDOC facilities, so you do not need to fund a separate phone account to receive calls. And as of May 10, 2026, the deposit platform changed - JPay is no longer accepted. The current and only provider for CDOC inmate deposits is CorrectPay.
Colorado has three main custody types for this purpose: the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) for state prison sentences, county jails run by county sheriffs for pretrial detainees and shorter sentences, and federal or immigration custody with its own rules.
State prisons: CDOC and CorrectPay
If your person is in a CDOC state prison, CorrectPay is the only deposit provider as of May 10, 2026. JPay, which was previously used for CDOC deposits, was phased out and is no longer accepted after May 9, 2026.
CorrectPay offers three electronic methods:
Online at correctpay.com - pay by credit or debit card, anytime.
Mobile app - download the CorrectPay app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, and deposit by credit or debit card on your phone.
Toll-free phone at 855-836-3364 - live agents are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for credit or debit card deposits.
Money sent before 4:00 p.m. Mountain Time is generally available to the person in CDOC the following day. Money orders and cash sent by mail are not accepted by CDOC.
For help with deposit questions, contact the CDOC Inmate Bank at (719) 269-4271. You will need the inmate's DOC number - the identification number assigned to every CDOC incarcerated person - for all deposit methods. Find it using the CDOC Offender Search on the department's website.
The 20% withholding rule
Colorado law requires CDOC to withhold a minimum of 20 percent of any deposit for court-ordered fines, fees, restitution, or child support. This is a statutory requirement - it applies to every deposit, regardless of the amount. Your deposit may be reduced by at least 20 percent before the remainder reaches the spending balance. If the person has significant outstanding obligations, a larger portion may be withheld.
If you are trying to help your person make a canteen order, allow two to three days after the deposit clears to ensure the funds are fully available.
Phone calls are free in Colorado state prisons
Colorado DOC provides free phone calls to people incarcerated in CDOC state prison facilities. You do not need to fund a phone account to receive calls. The account you are funding is for commissary and spending money only.
What happened to JPay for Colorado DOC
CDOC announced the transition from JPay to CorrectPay in early 2026. JPay remained available through May 9, 2026. Starting May 10, 2026, CorrectPay became the sole provider. If you have a JPay account you used for CDOC deposits, it no longer works for new CDOC deposits. Set up a new account with CorrectPay at correctpay.com or through the app. Funds previously in accounts are released to individuals upon discharge to parole, community corrections, or full release.
County jails: vendor varies by county
Colorado has 64 counties, each with its own jail operated by the county sheriff. County jails set their own deposit vendors independently of CDOC, and the vendor varies by county.
Denver County and El Paso County (Colorado Springs) are the largest county jail systems. Each county sheriff's office runs its own inmate banking. El Paso County and Jefferson County (Golden) both have their own inmate search tools. Check the specific county sheriff's website for the current deposit vendor, accepted methods, and any applicable limits.
Some Colorado county jails use CorrectPay kiosks, and CorrectPay's website allows you to look up whether your specific county jail uses their platform. Other counties use different vendors. The vendor is county-specific - never assume the CDOC provider (CorrectPay) is the same as your county jail's provider.
Accounts do not transfer between vendors. When your person moves from a county jail to a CDOC state prison - or between county jails using different vendors - the account and balance stay with the original vendor. You set up a new account with the new provider.
Immigration detention in Colorado
The primary ICE immigration detention facility in Colorado is the Aurora Contract Detention Facility (also called the Denver Contract Detention Facility) in Aurora, operated by GEO Group at 3130 Oakland Street. Its capacity was increased to approximately 1,530 in late 2025 and it holds ICE detainees from the broader Colorado and regional area.
For deposits at ICE detention facilities, Access Corrections (ViaPath) typically handles funds, but confirm the current method directly with the facility - ICE contract detention deposit vendors can differ from state prison vendors. You need the person's A-Number (nine-digit alien registration number) to search for them using the ICE Online Detainee Locator.
Federal custody
If your person is in federal Bureau of Prisons custody in Colorado, the primary BOP institution is FCI Englewood at 9595 West Quincy Avenue, Littleton CO 80123. Deposits to federal inmates go through the BOP Trust Fund via Western Union, MoneyGram at retail, or online at bop.gov. You need the eight-digit BOP register number. Do not use CorrectPay or any CDOC platform for federal inmates.
What to know before you send anything
Get the DOC number first. Every CDOC deposit method requires the DOC number. For county jails, use the booking number. Find DOC numbers through the CDOC Offender Search.
CorrectPay replaced JPay as of May 10, 2026. Do not attempt to use JPay for new CDOC deposits - it is no longer accepted. Register with CorrectPay at correctpay.com.
Phone calls are free - no phone account needed for CDOC. Unlike most states, Colorado state prisons do not charge for calls. You are only funding the commissary/spending account.
20% is withheld from every deposit. Colorado law requires at least 20% of every deposit to be held for fines, fees, restitution, or child support. Plan accordingly and allow two to three days for canteen order eligibility.
Money orders and cash by mail are not accepted by CDOC. All CDOC deposits must be electronic through CorrectPay.
