Located at 2728 Hwy 49 S in Oglethorpe, GA, Macon State Prison carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Macon State Prison is dedicated to ensuring public safety while effectively managing close security inmates within a safe and secure environment. As a Tier I & II facility, it maintains high standards of security and operations.

In terms of housing, the prison consists of nine buildings, each divided into two separate units with 48 cells per unit. One unit accommodates 46 isolation beds and two safe cells, while the other unit houses 48 double occupancy cells for segregation beds. Additionally, there is a Fast Track Unit Open Dormitory with four pods, each containing 64 beds. The facility also includes a fire station with ten beds and an infirmary with eight beds.

Work details at Macon State Prison encompass various institutional tasks such as laundry, food service, grounds maintenance, and inside maintenance, providing opportunities for inmates to develop vocational skills and contribute to the facility's operations.

The prison offers a range of programs aimed at offender rehabilitation. Academic programs include General Education Diploma (GED), Adult Basic Education, and literacy remedial courses. Counseling services cover topics such as cognitive restructuring (Thinking for a Change), re-entry preparation, moral reconation therapy, relapse prevention, motivation for change, and anger management.

Recreational activities like arts & crafts and talent shows are organized to promote positive engagement and personal development among inmates. Religious activities such as worship services, marriage enrichment, and spiritual study groups are also available.

Vocational and on-the-job training opportunities include computer operations, food service roles (baker, cook), barbering, laundry operations, custodial maintenance, groundskeeping, clerical work, and horticulture, equipping inmates with practical skills for future employment and societal reintegration.
