Valdosta State Prison, a close-security facility constructed in 1988 with subsequent renovations in 1989, is committed to safeguarding the public while providing comprehensive services for its inmate population. Its mission encompasses the custody of close security offenders alongside the provision of academic and vocational education, mental health services, and evidence-based counseling programs. The adjacent Annex, built in 1956 and opened in 1959, extends its mission to include the custody of medium and minimum security offenders while facilitating outside work details for the community. Notably, the Annex houses the Georgia Correctional Industries chemical plant, manufacturing cleaning supplies for prisons statewide. Operating as a Tier I & II facility, it serves a vital role in the correctional landscape.
The housing infrastructure of Valdosta State Prison comprises 10 General Population units with 500 beds, six Mental Health units with 264 beds, and specialized units including 25 isolation beds, 12 Acute Care Unit beds, and four Crisis Stabilization Unit beds. Additionally, the Annex offers 554 General Population beds, including 100 designated for the Residential Substance Abuse Center program. Alongside its housing units, the prison maintains specialized units such as the Special Management Unit (SMU), ensuring a structured and secure environment. Essential support services are provided by dedicated teams including the C.E.R.T. Team, Tactical Squad, and Canine Unit.
Inmate labor is integral to the daily operations of both Valdosta State Prison and the Annex, with a range of inside and outside work details offered. Inside details encompass tasks such as orderlies, grounds maintenance, horticulture, laundry, food service, and maintenance. Meanwhile, outside details involve partnerships with various entities including Correctional Industries, the Department of Transportation, local municipalities, and maintenance projects.
