Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

Eastern Correctional Institution, situated in Greene County, commenced operations in January 1983. Originally constructed to house male inmates, the facility underwent conversion in 2014 to accommodate female prisoners. Adjacent to Greene Correctional Institution, Eastern stands on land once cultivated by minimum-security prison inmates. Alongside its sister facility, Southern Correctional Institution in Troy, Eastern opened during the 1980s and 1990s, marking an initial expansion phase aimed at addressing the rising prisoner population.

Operated under the unit management system, Eastern Correctional Institution comprises six separate units. These units cater to various inmate populations and needs. The Green Unit, for instance, houses offenders enrolled in residential mental health programs, outpatient mental health services, and veterans' dormitories. In contrast, the Blue Unit accommodates both regular population inmates and those with chronic medical conditions. Similarly, the Red Unit houses inmates in restrictive housing as well as regular population offenders. Meanwhile, the Gray Unit serves as the location for the Therapeutic Diversion Unit (TDU) and maximum control environment.

Regular population offenders at Eastern Correctional are provided opportunities to engage in diverse work assignments and programs aimed at facilitating their successful reintegration into society. These initiatives include educational programs such as Adult Basic Education/GED classes, career readiness workshops, and computer applications training. Additionally, inmates participate in various work programs encompassing food services, janitorial duties, canteen operations, barber services, laundry and clothes house tasks, maintenance work, and religious activities, including group studies and worship services.

The physical layout of Eastern Correctional reflects its functionality and security requirements. The two-story prison spans 38 acres and is enclosed by double fences. The institution comprises five housing units, each tailored to accommodate 96 inmates in single cells. Within each regular population housing unit, three wings house 24 single cells, providing a structured living environment. Furthermore, the segregation unit consists of two wings, totaling 48 single cells equipped with sinks and toilets, to meet the specialized needs of certain inmate populations.

In terms of educational and vocational offerings, Eastern Correctional Institution provides a comprehensive range of programs to support inmates' personal and professional development. From Adult Basic Education/GED classes to career readiness workshops and computer applications training, inmates have access to resources aimed at enhancing their skills and knowledge. Moreover, the institution offers work programs encompassing food services, janitorial duties, and various other tasks to instill a sense of responsibility and prepare inmates for reentry into society. Additionally, religious activities, group studies, and worship services contribute to inmates' spiritual and emotional well-being during their incarceration.

Inmate Locator

Eastern CI maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.

Visitation Information

Visits to NCDPS offenders are by appointment only. Call the prison where the offender is housed to schedule an appointment. Visitors should call the prison the day before a scheduled visit to confirm the facility's visitation status. Also, video visitation now is available at most but not all prisons, so family and friends may be able to do a virtual visit if they prefer. Call the prison for additional information on video visitation at the facility.
Visitation by family and friends is encouraged and can make a positive difference during an offender's time in prison. Prison staff understand the importance of offenders maintaining contact with their family and friends. However, offenders can not be assigned to specific facilities within the prison system for the convenience of visitation.

For more information regarding prisons and visitation, please read the Handbook for Family and Friends of Offenders.
The increased safety and security measures are implemented to address, and ultimately eliminate, the introduction of contraband into state prisons. Any refusal to comply with all search procedures will result in the denial of entrance into the facility. Cell phones are considered contraband and are prohibited from all prison facilities. Appropriate attire is required.

Ask The Inmate

Ask a former inmate questions at no charge. The inmate answering has spent considerable time in the federal prison system, state and county jails, and in a prison that was run by the private prison entity CCA.
