How to Send Money to an Inmate in New Mexico

How to deposit money to a New Mexico DOC or county jail inmate. Correct Pay and money orders for NMCD, approved visitor list required, 5-digit NMCD number, facility-specific addresses, and county jail differences.

If someone you love is locked up in New Mexico, getting money into their account covers commissary - food, hygiene, phone time, writing supplies - and keeps the connection alive. New Mexico's state prison system has a firm requirement that families need to know before sending a single dollar: only approved visitors may send money. If you are not on the incarcerated person's approved visitation list, NMCD will not accept funds from you. Get that approval in place first.

Once approved, there are two deposit options: Correct Pay for electronic deposits, and money orders mailed directly to the specific facility. New Mexico does not use JPay, Access Corrections, or other national vendors for NMCD state prison deposits.

New Mexico splits adult custody into two systems: the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) for state sentences, and county detention centers operated by county governments. NMCD operates eight state prison facilities. New Mexico has 33 counties, each with its own detention facility.

Step one: get on the approved visitor list

Only individuals on an incarcerated person's approved visitation list may send money to NMCD state prison inmates. Funds from individuals not on the approved visitation list will not be accepted. To apply for approved visitor status, download the visitation policy and application from cd.nm.gov/constituent-services/family-and-offender-resources/visitation. Allow processing time before attempting to send money.

State prisons: NMCD and two deposit methods

Electronic deposits through Correct Pay

Correct Pay is NMCD's authorized electronic deposit platform. Go to correctpay.com, search for your person using their full commitment name and NMCD inmate number, and deposit using a credit or debit card. Funds are typically posted within 48 hours. For phone deposits or questions, call Correct Pay at (855) 836-3364.

Correct Pay is not JPay, Access Corrections, or ConnectNetwork. It is a separate, NMCD-specific platform.

Money orders by mail - directly to the facility

Approved visitors may mail money orders directly to the facility where the person is housed. Each NMCD facility has its own mailing address for money orders.

Include on the envelope and money order: the inmate's full name and NMCD number (a 5-digit corrections number). No personal mail, letters, or other items should accompany the money order.

Important: personal mail for inmates goes to Smart Communications processing addresses - not to the facility directly. Money orders for funds, however, are mailed to the facility addresses listed below. These are two different addresses for two different purposes.

NMCD facility money order addresses:

Penitentiary of New Mexico - P.O. Box 1059, Santa Fe NM 87504

Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility - 185 Dr. Michael Jenkins Road, Clayton NM 88415

Springer Correctional Center - 201 Highway 468, Springer NM 87747

Central New Mexico Correctional Facility - P.O. Drawer 1328, Los Lunas NM 87031

Guadalupe County Correctional Facility - P.O. Box 520, Santa Rosa NM 88435

Roswell Correctional Center - 578 W Chickasaw Road, Hagerman NM 88232

Western New Mexico Correctional Facility - 1700 East Old Highway 66, Grants NM 87020

Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility - 1983 Joe R. Silva Boulevard, Las Cruces NM 88004

The NMCD number is required

The NMCD number is a five-digit corrections identification number assigned to every NMCD state prison inmate. Required for both Correct Pay and mailed money orders. Find it using the NMCD Offender Search at cd.nm.gov/offender-search.

Personal mail goes somewhere else

Since an ongoing mail processing change, all personal mail to NMCD state prison inmates - letters, photos, drawings - is handled through Smart Communications and goes to a different address from the money order address. Check the current Smart Communications mailing addresses at cd.nm.gov/inmate-mail-addresses. Do not send personal letters to the facility money order addresses above.

County detention centers: vendor varies by county

New Mexico has 33 counties, each with its own detention facility operated by the county sheriff or county government. County detention centers set their own deposit vendors independently of NMCD.

Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center (Albuquerque), at 100 Deputy Dean Miera Drive SW, uses Access Corrections for deposits - online, by mobile app, or by phone at 866-516-0115 (bilingual, 24/7). A lobby kiosk accepting cash, debit, and credit cards is also available at the facility. For questions call 505-839-8700.

Doña Ana County Detention Center (Las Cruces), at 1850 Copper Loop, uses ConnectNetwork for deposits. For questions call 575-647-7600.

Sandoval County Detention Center (Bernalillo), at 1100 Montoya Road, accepts money orders by mail only - payable to the inmate; the inmate's name must be on the envelope and the money order; personal checks are not accepted. Mail to 1100 Montoya Road, Bernalillo NM 87004. Care packages can be ordered through MyCarePack.com. For questions call 505-867-5339.

The vendor is county-specific - the only reliable way to find the current deposit vendor for a specific New Mexico county jail is to check that county's website or call the facility directly.

Accounts do not transfer between vendors. When your person moves from a county jail to an NMCD state prison, the county account stays with the county vendor. You set up new deposits through Correct Pay or by mailed money order using the NMCD number - after getting on the approved visitation list.

Federal custody in New Mexico

If your person is in federal Bureau of Prisons custody in New Mexico - including FCI Allenwood (for some NM federal defendants) or FCI La Tuna in Texas, or the Cibola County Correctional Center operated under ICE contract - deposits go through the BOP Trust Fund via Western Union, MoneyGram at retail, or online at bop.gov. You need the eight-digit BOP register number. Do not use NMCD or county methods for federal inmates.

What to know before you send anything

Get on the approved visitation list first. NMCD will not accept funds from anyone not on the approved list. This approval must be in place before any deposit method will work.

Correct Pay is the electronic vendor - not JPay or Access Corrections. Use correctpay.com for online deposits.

Use the correct facility address for money orders. Each of the eight facilities has its own PO Box or street address for funds. Personal mail goes to Smart Communications - that is a different address entirely.

Include the 5-digit NMCD number on every deposit. Find it via the NMCD Offender Search.

County jails use different vendors. Bernalillo County uses Access Corrections; Doña Ana uses ConnectNetwork; Sandoval County is money order by mail only.
