New Mexico prison visitation rules, no weekend visiting, and the 2-year application renewal

New Mexico NMCD visitation rules, weekday-only visiting (no weekends), 2-year application renewal, $20 cash limit, two-day consecutive visit option, and dress code details. InmateAid.

INTRO

New Mexico's Corrections Department (NMCD) operates eight state-run facilities across the state - from the Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe to the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility in Grants, and contract facilities operated by private providers. Two features set New Mexico apart from virtually every other state in this directory.

First: NMCD does not conduct weekend visitation at most state facilities. Visiting days are weekdays - Monday through Friday. If you can only travel on weekends, New Mexico's schedule works against you. Guadalupe County Correctional Facility visits on Fridays only. Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility conducts in-person visits Monday through Friday with advance scheduling required.

Second: visitor applications in New Mexico expire every two years and must be renewed. Most states issue a one-time approval that remains valid until revoked. NMCD's two-year renewal cycle means families must remember to re-apply every two years or risk showing up as an expired visitor.

New Mexico uses commercial bail bonds - bail_banned = false.

NMCD's official visitation page (cd.nm.gov/constituent-services/family-and-offender-resources/visitation/) was last updated April 21, 2026 and is the authoritative source for all current schedules.

VISITOR APPLICATION - 2-YEAR RENEWAL REQUIRED

The Visitation Application Form (CD-100201.B) is available at:

cd.nm.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Updated-Visitation-Application-ADA-Compliant.pdf

(Updated April 2026 - ADA compliant version)

Per NMCD policy, visitation applications must be renewed every two years. If your application has expired, you will not be admitted even if you were previously approved.

The visitor application process:

- Visitors must be on the inmate's approved visitation list before any visit

- Criminal background check conducted on all applicants

- Approval is required before scheduling any visit, including video visits

RDC (Reception and Diagnostic Center) inmates: may only visit with immediate family members during the intake and classification period.

NMCD defines immediate family as: an inmate's legal spouse; natural parents; adoptive parents; stepparents; legal guardians; natural, adoptive, and step-siblings; natural, adoptive, and step-children; grandparents; and grandchildren.

All in-person visits at NENMCF are NON-CONTACT unless the visitor is immediate family AND proof of kinship has been provided.

Visitor suspension: visitors may have privileges suspended or permanently terminated under NMCD procedure CD-100202. Suspension notification is sent by certified mail via the Visitor Notification of Action form (CD-100201.4). A copy is also sent to the inmate.

NO WEEKEND VISITATION - WEEKDAYS ONLY

New Mexico is one of the only states in the directory that does not conduct standard weekend visitation at state facilities. Most NMCD facilities operate visiting programs Monday through Friday only.

Guadalupe County Correctional Facility: Friday only (8:00 AM-10:30 AM and 12:30 PM-2:30 PM).

Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility (NENMCF): Monday through Friday, must be scheduled at least one week in advance.

This schedule directly impacts working families. If you work Monday through Friday and cannot take weekday leave, visiting a New Mexico state prisoner requires planning around weekday availability - or using video visitation as an alternative.

Always confirm the current schedule with the specific facility before traveling. Schedules are subject to change.

Days must be consecutive (Monday/Tuesday, Tuesday/Wednesday, etc.). The same visitors must attend both days. This is the most explicit long-distance accommodation in the directory after Arkansas's 300-mile special visit rule and Montana's Riverside online scheduling. DRESS CODE - CD-100201.B

NMCD's dress code (Attachment CD-100201.B) is uniform statewide and applies to all NMCD facilities and all contract facilities. Published consistently across all InmateAid facility pages.

Visitors are NOT permitted to enter the visiting area with:

- Hats of any kind

- Sunglasses (unless prescription)

- Pagers

- Cell phones

- Any electronic device not associated with an immediate medical health condition

- Tobacco items of any kind (cigarettes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, vaping devices - all forms)

- Matches or lighters

- Any device, object, or substance capable of causing injury or fear of injury

- Alcohol or controlled substances

- Illegal substances

- Keys

- Currency in excess of $20.00 combined total in loose change

- Gifts or packages of any kind

The $20 currency limit in loose change is one of the lowest cash limits in the directory. Only coins are referenced - verify with the specific facility whether small bills are accepted for vending. Leave wallets, purses, and all personal items locked in your vehicle.

Tobacco of any kind is prohibited. Unlike states where tobacco is only prohibited in the visiting area itself, NMCD's policy covers all tobacco items brought into the visiting area - leave them in your car.

No color prohibition is published for New Mexico (no blue/orange/khaki equivalent).

Proper attire: clothing must be appropriate for a family visiting environment. Dress modestly - the code's standard is safety, security, and sanitation of the institution.

CONTRABAND - CRIMINAL PROSECUTION

NMCD's policy (published uniformly across all facilities) is explicit:

Visitors who use, possess, distribute, or attempt to introduce alcohol, controlled substances, or other contraband while visiting will be reported to the appropriate local law enforcement agency and removed from NMCD property.

Local law enforcement will be notified of any criminal offense committed by a visitor and NMCD will request prosecution.

This is not administrative discipline - it is a direct criminal referral. The standard applies at all state and contract facilities.

MINOR VISITOR RULES

No underage visitor will be allowed to enter a corrections facility without being properly identified and accompanied by a responsible adult relative, a parent, or a legal guardian - or presenting documented proof of the minor's legal marriage to the inmate.

The legal marriage exception for minors is unusual. It is explicitly published in NMCD policy (CD-100201.B citation [4-4275]) and reflects situations where a minor may be the legal spouse of an incarcerated person.

All minors must be properly identified upon entry.

ID REQUIREMENTS

Government-issued photo ID required for all adult visitors at every visit. Verify specific ID requirements with the facility - NMCD does not publish a consolidated ID acceptance list on the statewide visitation page.

VIDEO VISITATION

Video visitation remains available for approved visitors and eligible inmates. Visitors must be approved through NMCD before scheduling any video visit. Contact the specific facility directly for video visit platform information and scheduling.

There is no weekend exception for video visits noted on the NMCD statewide page - verify video visit day availability with the specific facility.
