The Platte County NE Detention Facility is a detention center located at 1125 East 17th St Columbus, NE which is operated locally by the Platte County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Platte County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Columbus Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The facility designed to hold 135 inmates, is a two story building with a second floor mezzanine.

The Corrections Division is operated under the Office of the Sheriff. The Director is a sworn officer with the rank of Lieutenant. The Detention Center provides a secure holding facility for persons legally confined in Platte County, including pre-trial, pre-sentence and sentenced adult male and female inmates. The facility also houses inmates from other counties within the State.

The current jail facility has a total of 38 full time male and female correction officers that man the facility 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Visitors must have photo identification such as a valid state ID, valid passport, or valid driver’s license. A state ID can be issued at any age.
• State certified birth certificate with raised seal for children under the age of eighteen (18) with the biological parents name listed that is in custody.
• Visitors must sign in for visitation at least fifteen (15) minutes prior to the scheduled visitation time. The visitor must remain in the area once they have signed in to visit.
• Visitors must be eighteen (18) years old. If under eighteen (18) years of age, the juvenile must be the inmate’s biological children and accompanied by their parent (s) or legal guardian.
• Visitors must register at the public lobby counter.
• No food, drinks, or smoking will be permitted in the visitation area.
• Visitors are subject to be searched. Charges will be filed for any attempt to smuggle or introduce contraband into the jail.
• Any disruptive behavior including intoxication, use of profanity, or failure to comply with staff member’s instruction by either the inmate or the visitor will be cause for terminating the visitation session and/or restriction of future visitation.
• Visitors will not be allowed into any other area of the jail.
• Visitation is on a first come, first serve basis. Only ten (10) visitors are allowed in the visitation area per session. If the visitation area is full, you will be required to wait for the next visitation period.
• Visitors must be properly dressed. Both adults and children must wear shoes at all times. No provocative clothing will be allowed. Inmates are required to wear their shoes and jumpsuit during visitation.
• Children who are disrupting other visitors will be asked to leave the visit is terminated.
• Children who accompany an adult in the visitation room must stay in the visitation room until the visit is over. Children are not allowed to run in and out of the visitation room.
• Children are not allowed to sit on the counter tops in the visitation room for the child’s safety.
• Any offensive language used in the lobby area may result in that individual being restricted from visiting for a period of time.
• No personal items are allowed into the visitation area. Personal property should be left in the visitor’s vehicle or secured into a locker provided in the lobby.
• Only one (1) adult visitor per inmate at any one time. No more than one (1) child per visitor will be allowed in the visitation room. If minor children are left in the visitation waiting area, they are to be supervised by someone over eighteen (18) years of age.
• All visitors will be required to pass through a metal detector before entering the visitation room.
• Visitors will be denied visitation if there is reasonable grounds to believe they are a threat to the facility’s security.
• If a custodial parent is incarcerated, the inmate’s minor children will be allowed to visit if a parent accompanies them. (Parent only – Not grandparents, aunt, uncle, etc.)
• All visitors must be registered through the inmate’s registry to be eligible to visit. If they are not already on the inmate’s visitor registry, they will not be allowed to visit.
• Visitors will not be allowed to visit if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Failure to comply with visitation rules and regulations will result in termination of the visit, or termination of future visits.
• In the event of a tornado watch/warning, all visitations will be terminated and visitors will be asked to leave. The visitation period will not be rescheduled for a different day or time.
• Once a visitor has left the visitation room, they will not be allowed access back into visitation.
• No visitation on state recognized holidays.
• Each inmate will be allowed two (2), one (1) hour blocks of visitation per week. Each visit, regardless of the length of actual time, will be counted as a one (1) hour block.
