Poinsett County Detention Center is classed as a medium security facility. It has a strengthened perimeter fence and electronic detection systems to ensure inmates stay within the facility. To help inmates prepare themselves to rejoin the wider community, Poinsett County Detention Center offers a wide range of work and treatment programs.

Poinsett County Detention Center is a County Jail used by the jurisdictions of Poinsett to confine inmates for short periods while awaiting trial or processing. As inmates are staying for only a short period, it has fewer amenities than a jail or prison. Inmates do, however, have access to bathroom facilities and are provided with meals during their stay. Poinsett County Detention Center may also have a common area in which inmates can socialize.

The Poinsett County Detention Center has a maximum capacity of 120 inmates. This includes male and female inmates, they do not house juveniles. There are eight Act 309 (State) inmates. The Act 309 inmates perform duties such as lawn care, building maintenance, custodial tasks, kitchen chores, laundry, community cleanup and car washes.

The inmates are required to co-pay for their doctor, nurse and dentist visits. Inmates are also required to pay for their medication, prescription and over-the-counter. A commissary account is established for the inmates, we do not allow the inmates to be in possession of currency at anytime.

Visiting times are established for the inmates. Male visitation is scheduled for Saturdays between the hours of 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and female visitation is Sundays between the hours of 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Religious services are conducted at the detention center, which include regular services, bible study, departmental chaplain and baptism services.
