The Cannon Detention is a detention center located at 3841 Leeds Ave North Charleston, SC which is operated locally by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Charleston County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, North Charleston Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for South Carolina here.
The Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center, originally established in 1966, has undergone several expansions to meet increasing capacity demands. The first expansion, completed in 1994, added a four-story building, raising the inmate capacity to 661. In 2007, two modular units were added, further increasing capacity to 789. The most recent expansion in May 2010 elevated the inmate population to 1,917. However, in 2020, the SACDC removed two modular units and the Work Camp, reducing the capacity to 1,693 inmates.
The detention center comprises four buildings, with the original Tower A housing various facilities including the Training Division, Inmate Library, and multiple inmate housing units. Expansion Towers B and C accommodate administrative offices, a state-of-the-art control center, a medical department, and a licensed infirmary, among other amenities. Additionally, the facility includes a Juvenile Detention Facility located off-campus.
Central Control, equipped with over 700 cameras, serves as the nerve center, meticulously monitoring the facility to ensure the safety and security of both staff and inmates. Access to the facility is tightly regulated, with all contracted employees and visitors required to pass through a metal detector, while bags are scanned to prevent the introduction of contraband. These measures uphold the integrity and security standards of the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.
