South Dakota DOC does not use a centralized mail scanning address. All mail goes directly to the facility where the offender is housed. The visitor application and approval process is required for both visits and sending money.
South Dakota SDDOC refers to incarcerated people as "offenders" throughout its materials.
Sending mail - letters and correspondence
Mail goes directly to the facility. Every piece of mail must include:
- The offender's name and DOC number
- A complete, legible return address (sender's first name, last name, full address)
Failure to include all required information may result in rejected correspondence.
Find an offender's DOC number and current facility using the Offender Locator at docadultlookup.sd.gov.
During Admissions and Orientation (A&O - approximately 20 days upon arrival), offenders are not allowed visits or phone calls, but they can receive mail. New male offenders go through A&O at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls; females at the Women's Prison in Pierre.
