Hughes Unit is for State Prison offenders sentenced anywhere from one year to life by the State Court in the county where the charges were filed

Located at Route 2, Box 4400 in Gatesville, TX, Hughes Unit carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Hughes Unit offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.
The Hughes Unit is a male correctional facility with a capacity to accommodate 2,984 inmates of various custody levels, including G1-G5, Security Detention, Safekeeping, and Mental Health cases. Situated on approximately 390 acres, Hughes collaborates with neighboring units like Crain, Hilltop, O'Daniel, and Murray in various agricultural operations, including Edible and Field Crops, a Farm Shop, and managing Security Horses and Pack Canines. Additionally, it operates a Swine Finishing Operation and a Garment Factory for manufacturing and logistics.
In terms of medical services, Hughes offers ambulatory medical, dental, and mental health care round the clock, supported by a well-equipped infirmary housing assisted living beds and mental health observation rooms. It also provides specialized services like brace and limb clinics and optometry, with telemedicine services available for enhanced accessibility. The facility ensures all services, including assisted disability services and CPAP accommodating housing, are accessible on a single level. Managed by UTMB, the medical care at Hughes maintains high standards.
The unit hosts special treatment programs such as the Mental Health Therapeutic Diversion Program (MHTDP) to address the specific needs of inmates. Educational programs are also available, covering literacy, special education, pre-release initiatives like CHANGES, and cognitive intervention. Career and technology programs like Custodial Technician and Pipe Fitting are offered, alongside academic opportunities provided by Central Texas College.
Hughes also offers various additional programs and services, including a Faith-Based Dormitory, Adult Education, Peer Education, Reentry Planning, Chaplaincy Services, and the GO KIDS Initiative, aiming at holistic inmate rehabilitation. Furthermore, the unit engages in community work projects, extending services to city agencies and local school districts. Volunteer initiatives encompass Substance Abuse Education, Support Groups, and Religious/Faith-Based Studies and Activities, fostering a supportive environment within the facility.
Hughes Unit maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.
If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.
Visitation plays an important role in maintaining the association between inmates and their friends and family as well as strengthening family ties. Visitation Procedure Update (effective December 28, 2023)

Confirm the unit visitation schedule and verify that visitation has not been canceled. An eligible inmate cannot receive visitors if visitation has been canceled.

Special visits or visits requiring special accommodations should be arranged before the visit. If you have made special arrangements with the unit, call before leaving to ensure that plans for your visit have been made and are in place. Spiritual visits must be coordinated through the warden’s office.
Each inmate is only allowed one visit per weekend. To the extent possible, individuals on an inmate’s Visitors List should coordinate with one another and with the inmate to prevent subsequent visitors from being declined when they arrive at the unit.
