The TCRJ is a low/medium-security detention center located at 4099 OH-559 Mechanicsburg, OH which is operated locally by the Champaign Regional Authority and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates have been here for less than five years. TCRJ accepts inmates from the Champaign County Sheriff's arrests and surrounding towns, Mechanicsburg Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Ohio here.
The booking department at Tri-County Regional Jail handles the intake of all inmates from the common pleas courts in Champaign, Madison, and Union Counties, which involves cataloging their personal property and processing their funds. During booking, inmates are required to provide personal information, including their name, current address, telephone number, age, date of birth, emergency contact, and employment status. Inmates are then issued an identification wristband. As part of the intake process, all inmates are scanned using a body scanner to detect contraband.
Newly arrested inmates are scheduled for arraignment before a judge on the next regular court day. Arraignments are typically conducted via video, although inmates may also be transported by bus to the courtroom. The arraignment process includes reviewing the bond, determining the need for appointing an attorney, and setting the next court date.
The booking department also conducts initial medical and suicide screenings, takes photographs and fingerprints for identification, and provides inmates with an Inmate Handbook. Depending on the charges, DNA swabbing may be required. Participation in the booking process, as well as health and mental health screenings, is mandatory. All inmates are required to shower upon entry. During the clothing exchange, personal clothing is removed and stored in a property bag, and inmates are issued a Tri-County Regional Jail uniform. Bedding and linen are provided, along with a hygiene packet containing essential items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, a comb, and a disposable cup.
The jail offers a phone program for outbound calls only, with inmates unable to receive incoming calls. Accepting collect calls can be expensive, sometimes exceeding $10 per call. Alternatively, setting up an account through a third-party phone company may entail high fees per minute of usage. Click here for discounts on inmate calls, especially if the communication with your inmate is frequent. It's important to remember that all phone calls are recorded, and discussing sensitive legal matters over these lines is discouraged.
Books and magazines ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at $8.00.
Regarding medical information, the jail's medical staff is prohibited from discussing an inmate's medical status with family members due to medical privacy laws. When reporting to jail for a commitment, individuals may bring money for their commissary accounts and prescription medications in their original bottles. To expedite the booking process, it is advisable to bring a copy of the commitment to jail if available.
