Can inmates send money home before release

My fiance is also at a transition center, is he allowed to send money home prior to his release for housing, transportation etc?

Yes, in many cases inmates at a transition center can send money home before release, but it is not automatic and must be approved by the facility.

Your fiancé will need to speak with his counselor or unit team manager and request the proper form to transfer funds from his inmate trust account. These requests are reviewed, and approval can depend on factors like his status, the amount requested, and the facility’s specific policies.

Most systems allow inmates to send out money they have earned or received, especially if it is for legitimate purposes like housing, transportation, or basic reentry needs. However, each facility has its own rules on:

  • How much can be sent
  • How often transfers are allowed
  • Who the money can be sent to

If he does not send the money ahead of time, many facilities will issue the remaining balance at release, either as cash, a check, or more commonly now, a debit card.

The best step is for him to ask his counselor directly so he can follow the correct process and avoid delays. Planning this before release is smart and can make a big difference when he gets out and needs immediate access to funds.
