Being on probation does not automatically disqualify someone from visiting an incarcerated person, but it does add a layer of requirements that have to be addressed before any visit can happen.

The first step is disclosure. When you apply for visitation, you are required to disclose your probation status on the application. Do not leave it off. Facilities run background checks on all visitation applicants, and an omission is treated far more seriously than the underlying offense. Honesty upfront gives you the best chance of approval.

The second step is getting permission from your probation officer. Most probation conditions include restrictions on contact with convicted felons or visits to correctional facilities. Visiting a prison or jail without your PO's knowledge could constitute a violation of your probation terms. Get explicit written permission from your probation officer before submitting a visitation application or attempting any visit.

Once you have your PO's approval, submit the visitation application to the facility and disclose your probation status clearly. Some facilities will require documentation of the probation officer's permission as part of the application.

The relationship to the inmate matters here. Being a spouse and the mother of the inmate's child is a meaningful factor that works in your favor. Facilities generally prioritize family connections, particularly when children are involved, and that context can weigh positively in a discretionary approval decision.

Getting this done properly through the right channels is worth the extra steps. Trying to visit without your PO's knowledge puts both your probation and the visit at risk.
