A school ID is generally not accepted as valid identification for prison or jail visitation. Facilities require a government-issued photo ID, which means a state-issued driver's license, a state ID card, a US passport, or a military ID. School IDs do not meet that standard because they are not issued by a government agency and do not carry the same verification weight.

If you are under 18, you will need to be accompanied by an adult who is on the inmate's approved visitor list. The adult accompanying you will need their own government-issued ID. Minors typically cannot visit on their own regardless of what identification they have.

If you are 18 or older and do not have a driver's license or state ID, obtaining a state-issued photo ID is the most practical solution. Most state DMV offices issue non-driver photo identification cards for a small fee, and the process is straightforward. That card will serve as accepted identification at any correctional facility in the country.

Before making the trip, calling the facility and confirming what forms of identification they accept is always worth doing. While the standard is government-issued ID, individual facilities occasionally have additional requirements or nuances worth knowing in advance.
