Inmates are not just turned out with nothing, but what they leave with depends on their situation.

Money:

  • Any money left in their inmate trust account is returned to them at release
  • This includes money earned from prison jobs and money sent in by family that was not spent
  • If they have no funds, some facilities provide a small release allowance, but it is usually minimal

Clothing:

  • They are typically released in either their personal clothing (if they had some stored)
  • Or basic state issued clothing if nothing else is available

Additional help (sometimes):
Depending on the facility and situation, they may also receive:

  • A bus ticket to get home
  • Basic reentry paperwork and instructions

Reality:
They are not left with absolutely nothing, but resources can be very limited if there was no money on their account.

Best thing you can do:
If possible, arrange:

  • A ride
  • A change of clothes
  • Some support when they get out

That first day out is a big transition, and having someone there makes a huge difference.
