How does an inmate get commissary money after release

I put money on my friends commissary account but he was released the same day, but the card they gave him didn't have the money I put on his account. How and when does he get that money that remained on his account?

This happens quite a bit, especially when money is added close to a release date.

When someone is released, the facility usually issues a release card or check with the balance that was already processed in their account at that moment. If you deposited money the same day, it may not have cleared in time to be included.

Where the money is now:

  • It is typically still in the facility’s trust or commissary account system
  • It does not disappear, but it may not have been transferred yet

What your friend needs to do:
He should contact the business office or inmate accounts department at the facility and ask:

  • If there is a remaining balance
  • How they issue funds after release (check, debit card, or refund)

What you can do:
You can also call the facility and ask about the deposit, especially if you have:

  • Receipt or confirmation of the transaction
  • Date and amount of the deposit

Timing:

  • Some facilities process this within a few days
  • Others can take a couple of weeks depending on their system

Important tip:
If the deposit was made through a third party service, you may also need to contact that company to confirm the money was delivered to the facility.

Bottom line
The money is usually still there, it just missed the release cutoff. A call to the business office will get the process started to have it sent to him.
