Visitation length varies by facility and can also change from day to day depending on how many visitors show up. There is no single standard that applies everywhere.

At most facilities, a scheduled visit runs somewhere between one and two hours under normal conditions. Some facilities allow longer visits, up to three or four hours, particularly for family members who have traveled a significant distance or when the facility has the space and staffing to accommodate extended time. Others cap visits at thirty minutes to an hour regardless of circumstances.

The practical reality is that crowded visitation days compress everyone's time. When more visitors arrive than the facility anticipated, staff often reduce individual visit lengths to cycle people through and ensure everyone gets some time. Showing up early, particularly on weekends and holidays when visitation traffic is heaviest, gives you the best chance of getting the full allotted time rather than a shortened visit.

Some facilities use scheduled appointment systems specifically to manage this problem, assigning specific time slots to visitors in advance. Others operate on a first-come first-served basis during open visiting hours. Knowing which system your family member's facility uses before you arrive helps you plan accordingly.
