In most state systems, a seven-year sentence for domestic assault does not mean seven full years behind the wall, but how much gets shaved off depends on the jurisdiction and the specific classification of the offense.

The 85 percent rule applies in many states, meaning at a minimum 85 percent of the imposed sentence must be served before release becomes possible. On a seven-year sentence that works out to roughly five years and ten months of actual time served before parole eligibility or release consideration kicks in. Some states apply this standard across all felony convictions, while others reserve it for specific offense categories.

Good time credits are the primary mechanism for reducing time beyond that threshold. Inmates who maintain clean disciplinary records earn credits that chip away at the sentence over time. In the federal system that is up to 54 days per year under the First Step Act. State systems vary but most have some form of good time credit available for eligible inmates.

Domestic violence convictions can carry specific conditions that affect how someone serves their time. Mandatory batterer intervention programming is common and completion of that programming is often tied to parole eligibility. Refusing to participate or failing to complete required programming can result in losing good time or being denied parole even after hitting the minimum threshold.

On visitation, the rules genuinely vary by facility and there is no single answer that covers every institution. What is consistent is the process. Getting on the approved visitor list comes first and that requires the inmate to submit names through their case manager. From there, the facility runs a background check on each visitor before approving them. Contacting the specific facility directly to ask about visitation days, times, scheduling requirements, and any waiting periods for new inmates is the only reliable way to get accurate current information.
