An inmate transfer can happen with little or no warning and the period of silence that follows, when families do not know where their loved one is or how to reach them, is one of the most anxious experiences in the entire incarceration journey. This section covers why transfers happen, how the transfer process works in federal and state systems, what diesel therapy is and why it occurs, how long the transit period typically lasts, why an inmate may temporarily disappear from the BOP locator during a transfer, and what families can do to locate their loved one and restore communication as quickly as possible. The guidance here comes from real experience with the transfer process, including what it feels like from inside and how families on the outside can best support someone going through it. The transfer occurs when the receiving county can spare two deputies. The only deadline would be a court date that the offender would have to be present.

It does not necessarily mean he will have to do the maximum sentence but it sounds like he might lose some good time. The transfer coming after a fight means it was either his fault and he is going to a higher custody facility, OR he was the victim and was transferred for is protection.

As long as it takes. Detainers are honored by almost all jurisdictions unless it is an ICE issue, then some sanctuary city detention centers will not honor the detainer. If this is not ICE, they will take their sweet time when two officers can travel to pick up their hold.

Unfortunately you have no influence over the custody level of an inmate. No one, not even a judge can designate an offender (they can only suggest or recommend, but the corrections department is independent and not bound to abide). Non-violent offenders are normally placed in minimum custody level facilities, especially if the sentence is under twelve months.

There are cases where the camp unescorted inmates are allowed to take a Greyhound bus to their new location. The camp "town driver" would taxi inmates to and from release points or transfer ins. We have not heard of inmates being allowed to go with a family member, but is sounds like a good idea. You should call the camp counselor and ask, they are very nice and polite in the federal system.

This sounds like a state inmate that has been transferred to a contract prison in another state due to several possible reasons. One is overcrowding, the other could be if he has a codefendant in the same prison (they separate them), third could be disciplinary, it could also be that they have a court date and need to be within a reasonable distance from the courthouse.

This means that he is probably in a facility that is not a BOP-run facility (but he is in custody somewhere). Do you know if he had to make a court court appearance? This would make sense, that if the Release Date is Unknown it might mean he is awaiting sentencing, either someone on his case has not settled and therefore his sentence has not been handed down. He definitely has NOT been released. Once he is designated to a BOP...
