What Should I Bring When Picking Up My Inmate at Release?

What should I bring to my inmate when he is released, when I pick him up? Clothing? Shoes? He's gained 30 lbs since he was incarcerated

The facility will release him in whatever clothing he has available, whether that is what he came in with or what he has accumulated while inside. If his original clothes no longer fit after gaining weight, you may want to bring a change of clothes in the right size to the pickup so he has something comfortable for the ride home.

Beyond that, a few practical things make a real difference on release day. Have a meal ready or planned. The first real food after a long stretch means a lot and a sit-down meal together is a natural transition back into normal life. If he has any immediate medication needs, have those arranged in advance. Bring any identification documents he will need right away if they were held by the facility.

Keep the day simple if you can. Release day can be emotionally overwhelming even when it is a good day. Too many people, too many plans, and too many obligations stacked on top of each other can create anxiety rather than relief. Let him breathe and settle into being out before the logistics of reentry start pressing in.

The most useful thing you can bring is a calm, patient presence and a plan for the next few days that does not ask too much of him all at once.
