Do they transfer inmates closer to home before release?

My son is in Calhoun Correctional Institution, which is 8-10 hours from our home. He's due to be released sometime in December. We have not seen him due to the distance. He's been there since 2015. I thought they tried to bring them closer to home before departure?

Not likely, transfers happen but with such a short out date, we are doubtful that they will move him.
