The instinct to get a lawyer involved when a loved one is being mistreated is completely understandable, but the reality of how prison authority works means that a lawyer's ability to intervene in day-to-day facility dynamics is very limited. Within the walls of a correctional facility, the warden and administration set the rules and resolve internal disputes. Outside legal counsel does not have standing to walk in and demand changes to how a specific inmate is being treated on a...

Whether a visit takes place in an open contact setting or through a glass partition with a phone is not a facility-wide policy that applies equally to every inmate. It is determined by the individual's custody level and housing assignment within the facility. Inmates at lower custody levels or in general population units are more commonly eligible for contact visits where you sit across a table in the same room. Inmates in higher custody classifications, administrative segregation, protective custody, or those...

Do they allow any conjugal or otherwise intimate visitation at St Brides in Chesapeake, VA?
Most detention centers do not allow conjugal visits.…

Most detention centers do not allow conjugal visits. There are a few state systems that allow it but none in county or federal. The visits are not "intimate" and depending upon the custody level of your inmate, you might not even have contact. The county jails are difficult to assess as the visitation rules differ. We would advise calling them and getting specific instructions to be sure.

The confusion here is understandable because it feels like being punished twice for the same thing. But internal discipline and criminal prosecution are two entirely separate systems operating independently of each other. The facility's decision to put him in the hole for 45 days was an administrative response to a rule violation. A criminal indictment by a prosecutor is a completely different action under a completely different legal framework, and one does not cancel out the other. Phone calls inside correctional...

There is no universal requirement that correctional facilities contact family members when an inmate is injured, and in practice, notification varies widely depending on the severity of the incident, the facility's internal protocols, and whether staff have a relationship with anyone on the outside. In serious cases such as a major medical emergency or a life-threatening incident, most facilities will make contact with next of kin. For lesser injuries, altercations that do not result in hospitalization, or situations that staff consider...

Visitation is one of the most important connections an inmate can maintain during incarceration, and most facilities recognize that by providing a structured process for approving visitors. The short answer is yes, inmates can have visitors, but it requires some preparation on the visitor's end before that first visit happens. The typical process starts with a visitation application, either submitted online through the facility's portal or completed on paper and mailed in. The application collects basic identifying information and is used...

It is natural to worry about a family member entering an unfamiliar facility, and the instinct to ask whether it is a good place comes from a real place of concern. The honest answer is that no prison is comfortable, but the reality of day-to-day life inside is usually far less dramatic than television and movies suggest. The inmate population at most facilities shares one overwhelming priority, getting out. That common goal creates a baseline level of cooperation that most people...

The first few days are the hardest, and they are also the most important in terms of how someone establishes themselves in a new environment. What your son does and does not do in the first week will shape his experience for the duration. The most important thing he can do is keep to himself. Not rudely, not fearfully, just quietly. Greet people respectfully, do not engage in conversations about charges or sentences, do not accept anything from anyone without knowing...

Supermax facilities, and ADX Florence in Colorado specifically, are designed around one principle: total control of the inmate's environment. Everything about the physical design and daily routine is engineered to prevent communication, coordination, and any sense of normal human interaction. Cells are small, self-contained, and deliberately disorienting. Natural light is limited. Inmates spend the vast majority of their time in solitary confinement, sometimes 22 to 23 hours a day, with minimal human contact beyond brief interactions with staff. The social deprivation...

This is a situation where the answer is technically possible but practically inadvisable, and the risks far outweigh any benefit. Co-defendants visiting each other is something facilities and prosecutors watch for specifically. The visitation approval process cross-references law enforcement databases, and if the connection between you and the inmate surfaces during that check, the application will almost certainly be denied. Beyond the denial, the attempt itself can raise flags with prosecutors who may interpret it as an effort to coordinate testimony,...

A prison functions like a small self-contained city, and the jobs that keep it running are filled almost entirely by the inmates who live there. Kitchen detail is one of the most common assignments, covering everything from food preparation to serving to cleanup. It is also one of the more sought-after jobs at facilities that offer good time credit for it, since the work is consistent and the access to food has obvious appeal. Landscaping and grounds maintenance keep the facility's exterior...
