Chaves Co Jail is for County Jail offenders sentenced up to twenty four months.

The Chaves Co Jail is a detention center located at 3701 S Atkinson Ave Roswell, NM which is operated locally by the Chaves County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Chaves County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Roswell Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Detention Center currently consists of 3 components.

Misdemeanor Compliance which consists of Court Compliance officers who oversee individuals who have been sentenced to probation on misdemeanor offenses or DWI offenses. In 2009, the average number of clients on Misdemeanor Compliance on any given month was 554.

Electronic Monitoring (INTV)

INTV consists of Court Compliance officers who oversee individuals who have been sentenced to electronic monitoring. This is also known as the bracelet program.

Community Service

Community Service consists of Court Compliance officers who oversee individuals who have been sentenced to community service by Municipal, Magistrate or District Court. In 2009, the average number of clients performing community service on any given month was 117. The average number of hours collected per month was 2,114.

The mission of the Court Services & Offender Supervision division is to provide exemplary service to the courts, attorneys, clients and the public; while providing ethical, conscientious supervision for our clients in an effort to empower them to reach a successful conclusion to probation.

Benefits of Visitation
Visits from family members, friends, and professionals are beneficial to both the inmate and the Chaves County Detention Center. Visiting provides the inmate with the means by which he/she can keep in contact with his/her family members and professionals to help cope with personal and legal problems. Consequently, visiting helps to reduce the tension and anxiety of confinement.

Visitation Schedule
Up to 2 adults who are on the inmate’s visitation list and up to 3 children are allowed at any of the scheduled visitation times. The inmate is allowed 2 visits per week between:

  • Thursday, Friday and Sunday
  • 8:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.

Visitation Rules
The following rules will apply to anyone visiting an inmate incarcerated at the Chaves County Adult Detention Center:

  1. Visitors 18 years of age or older must present a picture ID and must be on the inmate’s visitation list.
  2. Visitors must sign up in the lobby prior to visiting.
  3. Visitors will wear appropriate clothing. Visitors wearing revealing clothing will be refused.
  4. No cell phones, purses, backpacks, photographs, or tape recordings will be allowed.
  5. The visitor will conduct him or herself in an orderly manner.
  6. Visitors not complying with the visitation rules can be restricted from future visitation and cause the inmate to lose visitation privileges.
  7. No person or persons can enter the visitation booth without prior authorization sign-up.
  8. All visitors are subject to search while on the premises.
