The Federal Correctional Institution, Beckley (FCI Beckley) is a medium-security United States federal prison for male inmates in West Virginia. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. An adjacent satellite camp houses minimum-security inmates.

FCI Beckley is located approximately 51 miles southeast of Charleston, West Virginia and 136 miles northwest of Roanoke, Virginia.

Background: First established in 1974 as the Beckley Work Release Center, the facility was reorganized in 1997 and renamed the Beckley Correctional Center (BCC). In March 2011, the center expanded into the Jackie Withrow hospital to incorporate a Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (RSAT) on the grounds of the hospital.

Notable inmates include Steven Warshak the founder of Berkeley Nutraceuticals the manufacturer had claimed that Enzyte promotes "natural male enhancement," which is suggesting it was an enhancement for erectile function; he served 9 years for fraud and money laundering. James Kopp an associate of the anti-abortion group The Lambs of Christ; convicted in 2007 of the 1998 murder of Dr. Barnett Slepian, who performed abortions at a clinic in Buffalo, New York; Kopp was one of the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives prior to his capture in 2001 and is now serving a life sentence for murder. Eric DeWayne Boyd was convicted for assisting Lemaricus Davidson, the perpetrator of the 2007 murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, carjack a vehicle in order to elude authorities is currently serving an 18-year sentence for assisting in a carjacking to elude authorities.

Housing: FCI Beckley is comprised of two-person cells.

Health Services: Medical and dental sick call, medications, medical and dental open house, routine dental care, physical examinations, eyeglasses/contact lenses, and emergency medical and dental care are available at FCI Beckley.

Psychology Services: FCI Beckley offers the BRAVE (Bureau Rehabilitation and Values Enhancement) Program, which is a self-improvement program for young offenders serving lengthy terms of incarceration. Other programming groups for anger management and stress management are also available.

Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP): FCI Beckley houses a Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Additional services include a Drug and Substance Abuse Education program and a Non-Residential Drug Abuse Treatment Program (NR-DAP). The camp does not offer RDAP.

Education Services: FCI Beckley offers GED classes and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) classes. Adult Continuing Education (ACE) courses and a parenting program is also available. High school diplomas and postsecondary programs are available through paid correspondence programs.

Advanced Occupational Education: FCI Beckley offers advanced occupational education in Business Retail Management, Customer Service, Appliance Repair & Refrigeration, Blueprint Reading, Carpentry, HVAC, Masonry, and Residential Wiring. The camp offers Appliance Repair & Refrigeration, HVAC, and Welding. The advanced occupational college classes are offered through New River Community and Technical College.

Library Services: The Recreation Department offers a video library, where inmates may check out videos to watch during scheduled times. Videos are educational in nature and include a variety of topics related to health, wellness, leisure, athletics, and sports. Inmates may also check out various periodicals, magazines, literature, and other wellness and leisure reading materials. The law library is located in the Education Department and contains a variety of legal reference materials for use in preparing legal papers. Reference materials include the United States Code Annotated, Federal Reporter, Supreme Court Reporter, Bureau of Prisons program statements, institutional supplements, indexes, and other legal materials.

UNICOR: The FCI Beckley UNICOR facility produces ergonomic chairs and office furniture.

Commissary: Inmates are permitted to spend up to $360.00 each month for purchases. Funds from an individual account may be withdrawn by use of a commissary card for personal spending in the institution Commissary. Funds may also be withdrawn from the account for family support, or other approved purposes. Accumulated institution earnings and funds sent from outside are given to the inmate upon release, or may be mailed home.

Recreation Services: Recreatio programs at FCI Beckley include indoor and outdoor activities. Musical instruments and classes are available for inmates. The Recreation Department offers a variety of organized, league sports, usually including softball, flag football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. A variety of health and wellness classes, usually including NFPT, yoga, calisthenics, aerobics, and pre-release wellness are also offered. The FCI Beckley Recreation Department offers a variety of hobby craft activities, including drawing, painting, leather, and ceramics. Weekend movies, weekend pictures, musical lessons, group bands, and holiday tournaments and competitions are also available.

Familiarizing yourself with this information and knowing your responsibilities will help you to adjustment to institution life.

Commissary List - In 1930 the Department of Justice authorized and established a Commissary at each Federal institution. The Commissary provides a bank type account for your money & for the procurement of articles not issued regularly as part of the institution administration. Funds deposited by your family, friends, or other sources are stored in your commissary account that we maintain.

Covid Visitation Information

We remind all visitors to carefully review our special visiting procedures during the COVID pandemic, and also remind all visitors to observe applicable state and local COVID travel restrictions in planning your visit to the institution.

All visitors will be temperature checked with results annotated at the screening site prior to entrance. All staff working the screening site will be in proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Visitors will be in-processed on a first come first serve basis, adhering to social-distancing requirements. If distancing requirements cannot be met, visitors may be asked to wait outside for systematic in-processing to adhere to social distancing guidelines. Inmates on quarantine or isolation status will not be permitted visits - it will be the visitor's responsibility to check with the institution prior to arrival to ensure the scheduled visit can still take place.

The visiting room is designed to maximize social distancing, with a minimum of six feet between persons. Inmates are permitted two visitors per visit. To ensure equal opportunities, the frequency of visits determines any termination. Appropriate face coverings are mandatory for all inmates and visitors, all visitors wearing a mask will be provided one by the institution, theirs will be secured in the lockers in the lobby. No physical contact, photographs, food, or drink is permitted. A hand hygiene station, including alcohol-based hand sanitizer, is available at all visiting entrances and exits. Orderlies are assigned to each visitation room and will continually sanitize all touch surfaces, restrooms, etc.
