Indiana prison visitation rules, ViaPath scheduling, and the Eastern Time rule that catches everyone

Indiana IDOC visitation rules, ViaPath registration, Eastern Time for all scheduling, ex-offender approval process, trafficking permanent ban, and two-time-zone trap. InmateAid.

INTRO

Indiana's Department of Correction (IDOC) operates a statewide visitation system through ViaPath - the platform where every visitor must register, complete their application, and schedule visits. The system is straightforward once you understand two things that are easy to miss.

First: all visit scheduling through ViaPath is done in Eastern Time - for every facility, including those in northwestern Indiana that observe Central Time. If you're in Gary, Hammond, Valparaiso, or anywhere else in the Central Time zone and you schedule a 10:00 AM visit, you are scheduling a 10:00 AM Eastern visit, which means you need to arrive at 9:00 AM Central. IDOC publishes this explicitly, but families in the Chicago suburbs visiting northwestern Indiana facilities get tripped up by it constantly.

Second: trafficking - introducing contraband of any kind - results in a permanent, statewide ban from visiting any IDOC facility. Not a suspension. Not a temporary restriction. Permanent. The case goes to the Indiana State Police for prosecution.

Indiana uses commercial bail bonds - bail_banned = false.

VIAPATHREGISTRATION - REQUIRED FIRST STEP

All visitors must register for a ViaPath account and be approved before scheduling any in-person or video visits. Registration is free.

Register at: in.gov/idoc (follow the Visitation link to ViaPath)

The application process:

1. Register a ViaPath account

2. Complete State Form 14387 (Application for Visiting Privileges) electronically through ViaPath

3. Submit required identity documents electronically to the Facility Visitation Coordinator of the facility you wish to visit

Required documents may include: government-issued photo ID, Social Security card, birth certificate, approval letters, or other documents. The specific requirements are detailed in the application process - failure to submit all required documentation causes delays or rejection.

Processing: each facility has a designated Facility Visitation Coordinator who receives and processes applications. Warrant checks are conducted on all applicants.

The incarcerated person is responsible for notifying visitors of their approved status. Visitors should write to confirm they are on the approved list before attempting to schedule.

Attorneys, clergy, and government officials: request visits directly with each facility's Facility Litigation Liaison - no ViaPath application required.

THE EASTERN TIME RULE - READ THIS BEFORE SCHEDULING

IDOC's official website states explicitly:

"Remember that scheduling on ViaPath's platform is done in Eastern Time. So even if a facility is in an area that is Central time, all visits will observe Eastern time. If you are unsure of your time zone you may check it on the Time Zone Convertor app."

Indiana has two time zones. Most of Indiana (the entire state south of US-30, including Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, Terre Haute, and Bloomington) observes Eastern Time. Northwestern Indiana - Lake County, Porter County, LaPorte County, and parts of surrounding counties near Chicago - observes Central Time.

If you are in the Central Time zone and you schedule a 10:00 AM visit at an IDOC facility in your area, ViaPath is scheduling a 10:00 AM Eastern Time visit. Your visit starts at 9:00 AM Central. You need to arrive by 8:50 AM Central at the latest.

Always confirm your local time vs. Eastern Time before scheduling. Use a time zone converter if you are unsure.

VISITOR APPLICATION - ELECTRONIC ONLY

Indiana's application process is fully electronic through ViaPath. There is no paper form to mail to the facility. All applications and supporting documents are submitted electronically through the ViaPath visitor portal.

Do not apply during reception and intake. Each facility provides written visitation information to the incarcerated individual within 24 hours of arrival - wait for the incarcerated person to be classified and settled before submitting your application.

Ex-offenders: written approval from the Superintendent (facility head) is required before an ex-offender may visit. This is consistent with Illinois's warden-approval requirement but is published at the Superintendent level in Indiana. Warrant checks conducted on applicants - if an active warrant is found, local law enforcement is notified. The applicant's criminal history is treated as confidential and is not disclosed to the incarcerated person.

TRAFFICKING - PERMANENT STATEWIDE BAN

Indiana's anti-trafficking policy is one of the most severe in the directory and applies to all IDOC facilities:

Any visitor caught trafficking (introducing contraband, controlled substances, tobacco, electronic devices, or weapons while on IDOC property) will be permanently banned from visiting any offender at any IDOC facility statewide. The evidence is turned over to the Indiana State Police with a recommendation for prosecution.

There is no appeal pathway or reinstatement process documented for a trafficking-based permanent ban. The ban is statewide - not limited to the facility where the incident occurred.

This applies to all contraband including tobacco. Do not bring tobacco products onto any IDOC facility property.

VISITING HOURS AND FREQUENCY

All institutions have visiting hours on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Most facilities also have weekday visiting hours.

Weekend scheduling note: weekends are the most popular visiting time, and facilities may limit visits to either Saturday or Sunday for a given inmate - the specific day varies per individual. Do not assume you can visit on both days of the same weekend.

Indiana State Prison (Michigan City) - facility-specific rule: visitors may only visit the same offender once every 14 days. This is more restrictive than most IDOC facilities. Check the Indiana State Prison's Facebook page for cancellation notices due to unforeseen circumstances - ISP posts updates there.

Visiting hours vary by facility and security level. Check the specific facility's page at in.gov/idoc/facilities for current hours.

DRESS CODE - POLICY 02-01-102

Indiana's full dress code is in Policy 02-01-102, Section XVI. Key confirmed rules:

What you cannot wear:

- Hats of any kind

- Sunglasses

- Any items covering the face (exception: religious clothing, which must still be removed and searched)

- Clothing that is out-worn, torn, or has holes

- Transparent or frayed clothing that exposes undergarments

- Revealing, provocative, or inappropriate clothing

- Clothing resembling inmate or staff uniforms

What is required:

- Undergarments must be worn

- Clean, intact clothing in good repair

Indiana does not publish a specific color prohibition (no blue/orange/white/khaki equivalent). The standard is modesty-based. Bring a change of clothes in your car - staff have discretion, and having an alternate outfit lets you correct a dress code issue on the spot.

Religious clothing note: religious coverings may be worn to the facility but must be removed and searched before entry into the visiting area. Plan extra time for this.

Video visit dress standards: the same general policy applies to video visits, but certain standards that are only necessary for in-person visits do not apply. Clothing must not be worn out, torn, transparent, or frayed to the extent that undergarments are visible.

ID REQUIREMENTS

Valid government-issued photo ID required for every visit. Driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport. Expired IDs not accepted.

Additional identity documentation is submitted electronically during the application process (see ViaPath registration above).

MINOR VISITOR RULES

Minors may visit as part of the approved visitor group under adult supervision. Verify specific minor requirements with the facility and through the ViaPath application process, as requirements vary by security level.

Children requesting to use the restroom during a visit must be accompanied by an adult visitor.

SEARCHES

All offenders and visitors are subject to search. Refusal to be searched results in denial of the visit. All persons, vehicles, and items brought onto state property are subject to search.

Modified frisk searches may be conducted on staff and visitors when authorized by the Custody Supervisor or above.

VIDEO VISITATION - VIAPATH

Indiana uses ViaPath for video visitation at all facilities.

Platform: in.gov/idoc (ViaPath link from Visitation page)

Same approval requirements as in-person: must be registered with ViaPath, approved, and on the approved list.

Video visits follow the same rules as in-person visits except for dress standards that are only applicable in person.
