The Jefferson Co Jail is a low/medium-security detention center located at 317 Walnut St Madison, IN which is operated locally by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Jefferson County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Madison Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Indiana here.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Jail Division is staffed by a team of 14 full-time Jail Officers and 2 full-time contracted Nurses provided by Advance Correctional Health. Under the leadership of the Jail Commander, who oversees day-to-day operations, the division comprises various units dedicated to ensuring the efficient functioning of the facility.

Within the Jail Division, important offices include the Office of Professional Standards and the Office of Inmate Responsibility, each headed by a Lieutenant. Whenever an individual is arrested within Jefferson County, they are brought to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Jail Division for incarceration, marking the beginning of their journey through the criminal justice system.

Originally renovated in 2005 and operational since 2006, the current facility boasts 109 beds spread across 7 housing units. The facility serves as a temporary home for a diverse range of prisoners, spanning from those charged with minor offenses like shoplifting and public intoxication to more serious crimes such as rape, burglary, and murder. Jail Officers are tasked with the crucial responsibility of ensuring the care, custody, and safety of all inmates housed within the facility.

Operating as a self-contained unit, the jail provides essential services within its premises, including laundry services, meal preparation, and most medical and dental services, thereby minimizing the need for external resources.

Looking towards the future, plans are underway for the construction of a new Sheriff's Office & Jail facility, capable of accommodating up to 300 inmates. With groundbreaking anticipated in early 2021, this development underscores the county's commitment to enhancing its correctional infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the community.

While the majority of inmates spend only a short period in the jail, some may remain from arrest through trial to sentencing. Even after sentencing, individuals may continue to stay at the county jail for several months while awaiting transfer to a state institution. The Jefferson County Jail maintains an average daily inmate population ranging from 160 to 200, reflecting the dynamic nature of its operations and the ongoing challenges faced in managing the inmate population.
