The Lowndes County MS Jail is a detention center located at 527 S Martin Luther King Jr. Dr S Columbus, MS which is operated locally by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Lowndes County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Columbus Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Lowndes County Adult Detention Center is located in Columbus and is the primary detention facility for all law enforcement agencies in Lowndes County. The 288-bed facility was remodeled in 1997.

The Detention Center houses individuals charged and awaiting trial, those arrested on warrants, those serving sentences for misdemeanor crimes, those placed on holds by Mississippi Department of Corrections, and Probation, those sentenced to and awaiting beds in Mississippi Department of Corrections or Restitution Centers, those sentenced by municipal courts in our county as well as others placed here on holds for other agencies.

The jail is divided into separate cell blocks to ensure safety and security for the inmates and staff. The county jail has a specialized cell block that houses “high-risk” inmates based on the nature of their crimes, behavior while in jail or a health condition that requires specialized care.

The Lowndes County Adult Detention Center Business hours are 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m, Monday through Friday.

Mail Guidelines

They will not accept any letters or packages containing the following:

  • Letters with inappropriate language.
  • Letters or books with racial, sexual or gang related material.
  • No drawings (this includes on the envelope), no coloring pages, no newspaper clippings and no material printed off the Internet.
  • Letters or envelopes that have been sprayed with perfume or cologne.
  • Revealing pictures (meaning persons in pictures must be properly clothed) or pictures containing gang gestures or pictures of sonograms.
  • No stickers or glitter on mail; letters or cards.
  • No CD’s.
  • No hard covered books, books about prison or books with pictures inside.
  • No stationary items. This includes, but not limited to the following:

pencils, coloring pencils, pens, markers, colors, coloring books, paper,

envelopes, stamps, bookmarkers, etc.

  • No correspondence between inmates.
  • If you mail in any contraband to inmates, you could be charged with this.
  • If you send letters containing information pertaining to ongoing investigations (drugs, etc.) it will be seized and turned over to the Investigation Department.
  • We will only accept bank or postal money orders. Do not send cash!
  • Money orders must be sent through the mail. NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • It is your responsibility to make sure money orders are filled out correctly, if not they will be sent back to you.
  • Please remember to put the inmates' name on the outside of the envelope and your name and return address.
  • No boxes are allowed.

Inmates are allowed to order Canteen once a week, if that privilege has not been revoked. There are a variety of food items, personal hygiene items, etc. on the order form. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact this office at 244-0760.

Visitation Information

Lowndes County Adult Detention Center - Visitation

It is the policy of the Lowndes County Adult Jail to provide a safe and secure environment for the public as well as the staff and inmates. To keep it free of all contraband, weapons, etc. that could do bodily harm. This jail will function in a professional manner in order to accommodate the public.

Visitors entering the jail to visit inmates will follow all rules and regulations.

  1. Visiting time for female inmates in general population is from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M., Saturday or Sunday. Male inmates in the general population is from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M., Saturday or Sunday. Protective custody and inmates housed in the booking area, visiting times are 9:00 to 10:00 A.M., Saturday or Sunday. Visits may be cancelled or limited when necessary for safety, security and facility violations. Visiting hours are subject to change without notice.

Dress requirements and restrictions;

    1. All visitors must wear shoes
    2. No low cut tops will be permitted
    3. No bare mid-riffs will be permitted
    4. No short-shorts or mini-skirts will be permitted
    5. No see-through clothing will be permitted
    6. No cell phones, cameras or purses allowed in the facility at any time during visitation.
    7. No sitting or standing on the counter/ledge inside of the visitation rooms.
    8. Everyone must be able to pass through a metal detector successfully. If you have a medical condition, which activates the metal detector, you must provide the jail administrator a copy from your physician, stating the location of all metal or other particulars, which may activate the metal detector, otherwise, your visit will be denied, till you do so.

Visitors must have a valid ID, which must be one of the following;

    1. Valid photo driver’s license
    2. Valid state issued photo ID
    3. Passport
    4. Valid immigration card
    5. Current military ID card

Minors, to age of 16, are not required to present ID but must be accompanied by an adult.

Visiting; general rules and information

    1. Children infant to 16 will be accompanied by an adult to enter visitation.
    2. Children must remain with the accompanying adult at all times.
    3. If children are not kept under control, the accompanying adult and child will be asked to leave the jail.
    4. Inmates may have two (2) visitors per visit. Visits shall be fifteen (15) minutes.
    5. Visitors will be required to leave all of their property and valuables in their vehicle, including cell phones, purses, and jewelry. If not you will not be allowed to visit.
    6. Visitors will be notified when visiting time has expired.
    7. No smoking or tobacco products are allowed in this facility. If visitors are caught smoking, their visitation will be terminated. They will be asked to leave the Detention Center and will be restricted from visiting for a period of two (2) weeks or more.
    8. Once a visitor leaves the visiting area he/she will not be allowed to return to the visiting area.
    9. Visitors are subject to search before visiting with an inmate. The visitor may refuse to be searched, but he/she shall then be denied access to the Detention Center.
    10. Any person under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance shall not be allowed to visit and shall be subject to arrest.
    11. An inmate under disciplinary action for visitation rule violation shall not be allowed to receive any visits until visitation rights are restored.

    12. No food will be brought in from the outside.

      **Attorneys and Clergyman, due to scheduled everyday operations, we will do everything possible to accommodate you during your visit. However, security and safety issues may arise at any time and we may have to end the visit till matters are dealt with. We have listed below the availability of visiting with inmates.         CLERGY (VISITATION)

      • (Must receive a 24-hour advanced notice and be approved by the Jail Administrator or Detention/Support Lt.) Clergy are allowed to visit a particular inmate every seven (7) days, excluding weekends and holidays.
