The Lowndes County MS Jail is a detention center located at 527 S Martin Luther King Jr. Dr S Columbus, MS which is operated locally by the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Lowndes County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Columbus Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.
New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. The Lowndes County Adult Detention Center is located in Columbus and is the primary detention facility for all law enforcement agencies in Lowndes County. The 288-bed facility was remodeled in 1997.
The Detention Center houses individuals charged and awaiting trial, those arrested on warrants, those serving sentences for misdemeanor crimes, those placed on holds by Mississippi Department of Corrections, and Probation, those sentenced to and awaiting beds in Mississippi Department of Corrections or Restitution Centers, those sentenced by municipal courts in our county as well as others placed here on holds for other agencies.
The jail is divided into separate cell blocks to ensure safety and security for the inmates and staff. The county jail has a specialized cell block that houses “high-risk” inmates based on the nature of their crimes, behavior while in jail or a health condition that requires specialized care.
The Lowndes County Adult Detention Center Business hours are 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m, Monday through Friday.
They will not accept any letters or packages containing the following:
pencils, coloring pencils, pens, markers, colors, coloring books, paper,
envelopes, stamps, bookmarkers, etc.
Inmates are allowed to order Canteen once a week, if that privilege has not been revoked. There are a variety of food items, personal hygiene items, etc. on the order form. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact this office at 244-0760.

**Attorneys and Clergyman, due to scheduled everyday operations, we will do everything possible to accommodate you during your visit. However, security and safety issues may arise at any time and we may have to end the visit till matters are dealt with. We have listed below the availability of visiting with inmates.
