Phone Calls to a Nebraska Inmate | State Prisons and County Jails

How to call a Nebraska NDCS incarcerated individual. ViaPath for phone calls, GettingOut for tablet messaging. Inmate adds your number to approved list first.

Nebraska's state prison system uses two separate platforms for different types of communication. The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) uses ViaPath (GTL) for phone calls and GettingOut for tablet-based messaging and video visits. These are two different companies with separate accounts.

Nebraska's 93 counties each operate their own jails with independent phone contracts.

NDCS uses "incarcerated individual" throughout official materials.

PART 1 - NDCS STATE PRISONS

Phone calls - ViaPath (GTL)

The phone call vendor for NDCS state facilities is ViaPath, also known as GTL (Global Tel*Link).

ViaPath customer service: 877-650-4249

ViaPath technical support: 800-646-6283

Contact form: viapath.com/contact-us

How phone calls work:

The incarcerated individual must first submit a phone request to add your number to their approved phone list. Once the number is approved, they can use the housing unit phone to call you. You cannot initiate a call to the facility. All calls are monitored and recorded.

Setting up a ViaPath account: Visit connectnetwork.com or call 877-650-4249 to set up a prepaid (AdvancePay) account tied to your phone number. AdvancePay automated: 800-483-8314 (available 24 hours).

Rate: The current per-minute rate is not published on the official NDCS page. Available rate data as of 2024 show Nebraska state prison calls at approximately $0.03-$0.0625/min - well below the FCC 2025 IPCS Order ceiling of $0.12/min for large prisons. Verify the exact current rate at connectnetwork.com or by calling 877-650-4249 before adding funds.

Tablet messaging and video - GettingOut

NDCS distributes tablets to incarcerated individuals. The tablet uses the GettingOut platform (GettingOut.com) for messaging, photos, and video visits.

GettingOut support: 1-866-516-0115 or gettingout.com/contact-us

Note: Tablet distribution can take several weeks after an individual arrives at a facility. Until the tablet is issued and programmed, mail is the primary way to communicate.

GettingOut and ViaPath are separate companies with separate accounts. A ViaPath phone account does not give you access to GettingOut messaging, and vice versa.

Mail - TextBehind (digital delivery)

All personal mail from family and friends - letters, pictures, drawings - is digitally delivered via the tablet's "Facility Messages" app. You send physical mail; NDCS digitizes it through TextBehind and delivers it to the tablet.
