New Mexico launched Smart Communications tablets across its state prison system on July 1, 2024. Since then, all personal mail for NMCD state-run facilities routes to unique PO Boxes in Seminole, Florida - not to the facilities themselves. Mail is scanned and uploaded digitally to the inmate's tablet.
Each facility has its own dedicated PO Box. Getting the right one matters; using the wrong address or sending mail directly to the facility will result in it being returned.
Lea County Correctional Facility - previously a privately operated NMCD facility - closed in 2025 and is no longer part of the system.
New Mexico DOC refers to incarcerated people as "inmates" throughout its materials.

What mail restrictions apply
The following items are not accepted and will be returned to sender:
- Rigid or cardboard items that cannot run through the scanner (including USPS express envelopes that do not bend without creasing)
- Greeting cards (glued construction makes them impossible to inspect without destruction)
- Packages
- Personal checks (cashier's checks returned unless specific requirements are met - see below)
- Mail that lacks the NMCD# to clearly identify the inmate
Any parcel containing prohibited items is returned to the sender in its entirety.
Mail must be properly addressed with identification information - including the inmate's NMCD# - sufficient to clearly identify the person in custody.
Legal mail
Legal mail goes directly to the facility - not to the Seminole PO Boxes.
Privileged mail (legal mail) must come from: a licensed attorney, judges, or clerks of any federal, state, or local court. The outside of the envelope must have official markings. Legal mail is opened in the inmate's presence and checked for contraband.
Any mail otherwise designated as "privileged" that does not meet these requirements loses that designation.

Finding an inmate
Offender search: cd.nm.gov/offender-search/
Search by first and/or last name or NMCD Number.
Note: NMCD does not have jurisdiction over county or city detention facilities. If an inmate does not appear in the NMCD search, they are not in state custody - contact the relevant county detention center directly.

Frequently asked questions

To the Smart Communications PO Box for the specific facility in Seminole, FL - not to the facility itself. Find the correct PO Box from the list above. Include the inmate's full name and NMCD# on the envelope.
What is the NMCD number?
The NMCD number is the inmate's state corrections identification number. Find it using the offender search at cd.nm.gov/offender-search/.

Can I send a greeting card?
No. Greeting cards are not accepted because their glued construction makes inspection without destruction impossible. Parcels containing greeting cards are returned in their entirety.

Not directly through the mail. Packages are returned. Quarterly food packages are ordered through Union Supply Direct at nminmatepackage.com.
Can I send money in the mail?
