While incarcerated, reading is often the best use of time. Please note that books and magazines, puzzles, and word searches ordered for inmates must come directly from the publisher. This policy ensures that the items are new, untampered, and comply with the facility's regulations. Prisons and jails enforce this rule to prevent the introduction of contraband or prohibited materials. By restricting orders to publishers, the facility can better maintain security and control over the content entering the institution. Any books or magazines not received directly from the publisher will be rejected and not delivered to the inmate. You may, however, send letters and selfies to inmates with this easy-to-use app, packages starting at only $8.00.
The New Hampshire State Prison for Men (NHSP-M) stands as the state's oldest correctional facility, with its original construction dating back to 1812. However, a new facility was erected in 1878, which underwent significant renovations and new construction in the 1980s, ensuring its continued use to this day. NHSP-M is a male-only facility accommodating multiple security levels, with a total operational capacity of 1,408 inmates.
The majority of inmates reside in one of three general population housing units within NHSP-M. Additionally, the facility includes two separate housing units for individuals requiring higher custody levels, along with a Reception and Diagnostic (R & D) area. The R & D area houses newly sentenced individuals, probation or parole violators, and those undergoing short-term protective custody review.
Over the past fiscal years, various Capital Budget improvement projects have been ongoing at NHSP-M to address necessary repairs and updates due to the facility's age. These projects encompass the repair and replacement of elevators, updates to bathroom facilities in two general population units, replacement of the facility-wide "man down / body alarm" system, upgrades to internal video surveillance systems, and repair and replacement of several security doors. Furthermore, the design and specification process has commenced for a new central kitchen.
NHSP-M operates as a medium (C3) to maximum (C5) security level facility. With its original structure built in 1878 and significant renovations carried out in the 1980s, the facility stands as a cornerstone of New Hampshire's corrections infrastructure, catering to the diverse needs of its inmate population while prioritizing safety and security.
