The Niobrara County WY Detention Facility is a detention center located at 416 South Elm St
PO Box 1085 Lusk, WY which is operated locally by the Niobrara County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Niobrara County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Lusk Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Wyoming here.

Niobrara County, Wyoming has a fourteen bed facility capable of holding adult male and female inmates. Inmates are classified as either being pre-sentenced or sentenced and are 18 years of age and older. Male and female inmates are housed in separated cell blocks.

Should a child be arrested they will not be booked into our facility. They will be transported to a juvenile detention facility outside Niobrara County.

Once a person 18 years or older is arrested and brought to jail, they will be searched, property removed and inventoried. The booking process is completed depending upon the cooperation of the arrested person. Before a person can be released or placed into general housing population, some basic information must be collected about the person to include;

  • Legal Name.
  • Date of birth.
  • AKA Names and date of births used in the past.
  • Finger / palm printed.
  • Mug and side profile photographed.
  • Tattoos photographed.
  • NCIC record check completed.
  • Strip search before placed into general population.

BAC level must be .000% before release, or placement in general jail population.

An NCIC warrant check will be completed before release from custody.

The Circuit Court will be informed on all persons arrested and detained in our facility on local charges. This Court will set the bond requirements before release. Bond amounts may not be known for four to eight hours after the arrest.

There is no bond for sentenced inmates who are require to complete their sentence.

Persons arrested or held on a warrant from another jurisdiction will not be released until the holding agency gives authorization for release via law enforcement teletype or the forfeitable bond requirements are met.

Food Service

We have contracted with the Wyoming Women Center, WWC female prison to provide meals for county inmates. Inmates will receive an afternoon meal and evening meal from the prison. Breakfast is provided by our detention staff in the form of cold cereal and toast.

Inmate services - Life in jail can be depressing. For inmates who need mental health services. We have contracted with local physical and mental health providers. Inmates who wish to meet with medial care they will need to submit a request to the county nurse. Inmates with the means to pay for these services will be bill for these services.

Person Arrested for DWUI

Will need to have an Addiction Severity Index (ASI) completed before sentencing. The cost for this testing is the responsibility of the person being sentenced. To obtain an ASI screening, you can do so by making an appointment with most any mental health care provider. Person arrested for DWUI will be held in jail for 12 hours and a BAC level of .000% before release. Some DWUI arrest may be in jail longer depending upon bond requirements.

Phone service

Is not free for inmates. Access to phone service is depended upon security needs of the jail. When phone service is offered all calls are monitored and recorded. If an inmate attorney call is needed, the attorney should contact the jail 307.334.2240. Attorney must be member of the Wyoming BAR and the attorney retained or assigned to the inmate.
