Located at 4344 Broad River Rd in Columbia, SC, Kirkland CI carefully assigns inmates based on their custody level, considering factors like criminal history. Kirkland CI offers diverse educational and vocational programs aimed at equipping offenders for successful reintegration into society and reducing recidivism. Through these initiatives, inmates gain skills and confidence, fostering personal growth and resilience.

Kirkland Correctional Institution, established in 1975, operates as a close-custody facility for male offenders aged 17 and above, sentenced to 91 days or more. With a comprehensive intake process, Kirkland assesses and classifies approximately 8000 offenders annually, including housing the state's Maximum Security Unit for the most dangerous and violent inmates.

Education is a priority at Kirkland, offering educational evaluations, monthly GED testing, Corrections Learning Network programs, GED preparation, and adult basic education to facilitate offender growth and development.

The institution provides routine medical and dental care on-site, supported by a DHEC-licensed 24-bed infirmary catering to all SCDC male inmates. Mental health services are also available through the Gilliam Psychiatric Hospital staff, along with an Intermediate Care Services Unit for males requiring specialized care.

A variety of programs are offered to promote rehabilitation, including religious services, volunteer services, CIU, Shock, ICS, reentry services, and recreational activities aimed at fostering positive behavior and personal growth among inmates.

Furthermore, Kirkland serves as a vital link in the parole process, acting as a video conferencing site for parole hearings in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services. Through these initiatives, Kirkland CI endeavors to fulfill its mission of inmate rehabilitation, community safety, and successful reintegration into society.

Inmate Locator

Kirkland CI maintains a database of current inmates and their locations within the system. To locate an inmate, begin by using the DOC locator tool, which requires entering the first three letters of the inmate's first and last name, allowing for variations in spelling.

If unable to locate the desired information through free resources, users may opt to use the Arrest Record Search, which requires payment. While this option incurs a small fee, it provides access to the most up-to-date data available.

Ask The Inmate

Ask a former inmate questions at no charge. The inmate answering has spent considerable time in the federal prison system, state and county jails, and in a prison that was run by the private prison entity CCA.
