The Sullivan Co Jail is a detention center located at 140 Blountville Bypass Blountville, TN which is operated locally by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Sullivan County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, Blountville Police Department, and the US Marshal's Service.

New detainees arrive at the jail regularly, with some being released on bail, placed under pretrial services caseloads, supervised by probation agencies, or released on recognizance with a court appearance agreement. Those who are not released await their court appearances at the jail, receiving accommodations including bedding and meals. You can see all the arrest records for Tennessee here.

Corrections Division provides a safe environment for the inmates as well as for the employees. The Corrections Division is comprised of 114 employees separated into two divisions. The administrative division consists of food service, medical, training, commissary, work release, day reporting, and all inmate programs. The operations division consists of the officers working the four shifts in the housing facilities and the transportation unit.
In 2006, the jail's capacity was 383, with an average daily population of 536. In May 2007, we opened a new minimum-security facility with a capacity of 240. This has helped to relieve the very real and very dangerous problem of overcrowding in our correctional facility. The new jail extension facility is equipped with a full-service kitchen, a laundry, a visitation area, a chapel, a property room, and a medical suite. New inmate programs initiated in 2007 include GED classes, Drug and Alcohol classes, and parenting classes for the female inmates.

Medical - Continuous health care is provided 24 hours a day for the inmates, with at least one nurse on duty at all times. We work in conjunction with the Sullivan County Health Department to provide communicable disease education for the inmates. Frontier Health provides relapse prevention management to inmates with substance abuse issues in an effort to promote abstinence from substance abuse upon their release from jail. We provide health education for chronic medical illnesses and for all related medications prescribed to inmates. All chronic illnesses are monitored closely by regular visits with the physician and nurses, and by laboratory testing. X-rays, EKGs, and ultrasounds are provided on-site by Medical Mobile Diagnostic Services. Obstetric care is provided for all pregnant female inmates by East Tennessee State University of Bristol.

All inmates receive a physical examination including tuberculosis testing within fourteen days of their incarceration. Intake medical screenings are reviewed on every inmate within twelve hours of admission to the facility. Inmates with chronic illnesses who are being released back to the community are provided with medication and discharge plans to continue medical treatment.
